  • Chapter 1: Maycomb

    Chapter 1: Maycomb
    Here is where Scout introduces us to the infamous Boo Radley, we meet Dill, and the many other characters of Maycomb County, The kids try their first experiment on the Radley house. (Jem goes up and touches it, because of Dill's dare.) We also learn Boo's history, Atticus's dislike for law practice, and the general feel of Maycomb.
  • Chapter 3: Scout's Dilema

    Chapter 3: Scout's Dilema
    Scout has yet another unpleasant day at school, and thinks of running away. She tries to convince Atticus to not make her go to school, because she can't read. He decides to keep reading to her in secret if she agrees to go to school.
  • Chapter 2: Miss Caroline

    Chapter 2: Miss Caroline
    Scout starts school, and deals with the ignorant Miss Caroline, who is starting to learn that your family name affects what you do and how you eat, work, and learn. Scout is then first confronted with the idea of not being able to read anymore. This will alter drive ulterior decisions.
  • Chapter 4: The Game

    Chapter 4: The Game
    Scout and Jem find things in the tree hole and don't know what to think, but keep taking them anyway. School ends, and Dill comes back for the summer, and the three of them start playing a game that consits of all the rumors of Boo Radley's life. Scout is a bit reluctant about the whole thing, and eventually Atticus catches them, but pretends to not know what they are doing and gives them a second chance.

    Chapter 6: The Pants
    The last night before Dill is supposed to leave, Jem, Scout and him decide to venture into the backyard of the Radley house, to try and see what they can. They try and see into the windows but to no avail. Then, Mr. Nathan Radley comes out with a gun and shoots it in the air to scare off the children. As they are running out, Jem gets his pants caught on the fence. In a hurry, he leaves them there, and when he comes back for them at 2 in the morning, they are sitting on the fence all sewed up.
  • Chapter 5: Caught

    Chapter 5: Caught
    In this chapter, Scout has a long conversation with Miss Maudie about Boo Radley. She comes her her after she is being excluded by the boys. This may be some foreshadowing that as Scout gets older, she will gravitate towards other mother-like figures like Miss Maudie as the boys separate from her. Also, Jem and Dill devise a plan do give Boo a note through his window asking him to come out, and Atticus catches them red-handed and forces them to stop playing the game.
  • Chapter 7: The Treasure

    Chapter 7: The Treasure
    In this chapter, Jem and Scout find MORE surprises in a tree hole as they are walking home from school. This continues for some time until they write a letter to whoever is giving them things and puts it in there. The next day, the hole is filled with concrete. When they ask Mr. Radley why he did that, he said because the tree was dying. But when Jem asked Atticus if the tree was truly dead, he said it wasn't.
  • Chapter 8: The Fire

    Chapter 8: The Fire
    It snows for the first time in Maycomb County since 1885. Scout doesn't even know what snow is, but quickly learns that it is wonderful as her and Jem start building a snowman. Then, in the middle of the night, Miss Maudie's house catches on fire and burns down. During the night, Jem and Scout are standing in the road watching the house go down, shivering. When Scout gets back in the house she finds a blanket on her: while she was standing there, Boo Radley put it around her shoulders.
  • Chapter 9: Uncle Jack

    Chapter 9: Uncle Jack
    In this chapter, Atticus explains the Tom Robinson case to Scout and asks her to not fight at school. This works, until Christmas when she sees Uncle Jack and extened family. When her cousin Francis calls Atticus a "nigger-lover" she looses it and starts beating him. She confides in Uncle Jack the real reason she fought Francis and asks her uncle not to tell Atticus. He keeps his word.
