My Science Timeline

  • Bill Nye the Science Guy

One summer, we went to visit my grandmother in Oregon for about a month. I was about 8 years old. I remember my brother and I got so bored that we started watching Bill Nye the Science Guy for hours and hours. It became our favorite thing to do each day! I don't remember all that Bill taught my brother and I, but I do remember being so fascinated by the experiments and concepts that he talked about. I can thank Bill for giving me a greater love for science.
  • Owl Pellets

That same summer on my grandmother's farm, my uncle brought us into his barn, helped us collect several owl pellets found on the ground, and helped us dissect them. We found all sorts of rat bones! I am so glad that my uncle took the time to explore science with me and my older brother.
  • Mrs. Nakamura's Class 7th Grade

I had a teacher named Mrs. Nakamura that made science that year just awful. It was a geology class, and she made it terrible for all of us. She was mean, graded hard, and made her tests impossible to pass. I still have a hard time with geology because of her, because there was no fun and engagement in her class! It was all worksheets, reading, and tests. That is not what science should be about!
  • Dissecting Frogs

Most of the girls in my class were disgusted by this project, but I found it so fascinating. We dissected frogs in 8th grade. Although it smelled so bad, I thought it was so cool to be able to see the different parts of the frog. I remember thinking how amazing it was that God paid such attention to detail when even making the smallest creatures.

    Mr. Rischling's Astronomy Class

When I was in 10th grade, I took an astronomy class from Mr. Rischling. It was the coolest class ever! I remember learning so much about constellations and space. One very special moment was when we were able to go out and look at the night sky together. Mr. Rischling pointed to the constellations and planets in the sky using a flashlight. This was when my love for astronomy really blossomed.
  • Physical Science Class

At BYU, I took Physical Science. Although it was challenging for me, I remember really liking the class. I especially loved when we talked about cells. We learned the parts of cells and how they functioned. For some reason, that knowledge has stuck with me.
  • The Big Bang Theory

It sounds silly, but this television's quirky way of joking about science has always made me want to investigate what they are talking about on my own. They use science on a daily basis to describe the world around them. It has always made me want to investigate deeper the world around me so that I can understand the world better. I started watching it in 2013, and it is still one of my favorite shows.

Nutrition Class BYU with Dr. Christiansen

I don't know if you officially classify nutrition as a science, but I learned so much about the human body and how it works. I loved learning about the way that the body stores and uses food as energy. I found that I could be a healthier individual by learning the science behind food and nutrients. I loved how Dr. Christiansen taught this class because he started out with our questions and then addressed those questions throughout the year in his lectures.
