    Leading on from his previous career in naval aviation, Armstrong joined NACA (the National Advisory Committee for Aerobics). NACA later evolved into the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) which we know today, and that gained Armstrong his worldwide recognition.

    On 16 March, 1966, Armstrong participated in the mission Gemini VIII with David Scott. Their craft docked with Gemini Agena vehicle, but the mission was ended soon after due to issues with the docking.

    On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong launched from Earth with fellow astronauts Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin on the Apollo 11 mission. They arrived at the moon, and Armstrong stepped out of their craft with the flag of the USA. He planted the flag in the ground, before collecting samples of moon rock and matter.
