  • Tariff of 1828

    The Tariff of 1828, also known as the Tariff of Abominations, raised the taxes up to 50% on manufactured goods. The tariff also scrutinized items imported to New England. This was seen as unconstitutional because it favored manufacturing over agriculture and commerce according to Calhoun.

    This was a protective tariff meant to correct the wrongings of the 1828 Tariff by protecting the fastly growing industry in the North. The Tariff of 1832 was considered unconstitutional because it was more detrimental than helpful.

    The Ordinance of Nullification declared the Tariffs of 1828 and 1832 unconstitutional. The ordinance took place in South Carolina.

    This proclamation was passed by President Jackson that gave the states the right to nullify federal laws if they were deemed unconstitutional by the state.
