    Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.

    Alliance among Britain, France, and Russia.
    This was to counterweight the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy

  • Austria-Hungary Takes Control of Bosnia

    Austria-Hungary annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina.
    This damaged relations between Austria-Hungary and Russia.

  • Franz Ferdinand Assassinated

    Archduke was on a peace visit to Sarajova.
    A Serbian spy, Gavilo Princip, shot him.

  • Austria-Hungary Declares War on Serbia

    Declared because of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
    Started World War I.

  • Germany Invades Belgium

    Germany invaded Belgium to outflank the French army.
    The United Kingdom declared war on Germany.

  • The Lusitania

    It was believed by the Germans to be holding weapons.
    A U-Boat hit it with a torpedo and sank it.
    Brought the US into the war.

  • Battle of the Somme Begins

    Battle of the Somme Video British and French began fighting the Germans at the Somme River.
    Battle took place in France

  • Battle of the Somme Ends

    The Allies only gained 6 miles into German territory.
    One of the deadliest battles in history.

  • The Zimmerman Note

    Sent from Arthur Zimmerman to Mexico to persuade them to declare war on the United States.
    The United States intercepted it and it helped contribute to the US declaring war on Germany.

  • United States Declares War on Germany

    Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to declare war on Germany.
    Wilson was upset with the sinking of the Lusitania and the Zimmerman Note.

  • World War I Ends

    Germany signed a treaty in a railroad car in Compiénge, France.
    Ended World War I
