    Pearl Harbor
    The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise military strike conducted by the Imperial Japanese Navy against the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, which led the United States into World War II. The base was attacked by 353 Japanese airplanes launched by six aircraft carriers. The strike was a preventive measure to keep the U.S. Pacific Fleet from interfering with the Empire of Japan's military plans against Southeast Asia territorys of the United Kingdoms, Netherlands and the U.S.

    Allied Navys suffered a terrible defeat by the Imperial Japanese Navy. The American-British-Dutch-Australian Command Strike Force commander, Rear-Admiral Karel Doorman was killed.The aftermath of the battle included several smaller actions around Java, including the smaller but also significant Battle of Sunda Strait. These defeats led to Japanese occupation of the entire Netherlands East Indies.
    This battle was the largest surface ship engagement since the Battle of Jutland in 1916
