Parliament Acts

  • Proclamation of 1763

    This act stopped westward expansion halting the expansion at the Appalachian Mountains. Colonists didn't listen to the Proclamation of 1763 because the act passed after western expansion had already gone past the Appalachian Mountains.
  • Sugar Act

    The sugar act reduced the rate of tax on molasses by half. The colonists didn't like this because the molasses producers weren't making enough money to stay stable. They protested and boycotted items in response to the Sugar Act.
  • Currency Act

    This act prohibited the use of colonial currency and forced the colonies to use the British pound. The colonies didn't like this act and protested for it to be repealed.
  • Stamp Act

    This put taxes on all materials for legal and commercial use in the colonies. The colonists didn't like this to the point where the protested and rioted.
  • Quartering Act

    This act made the colonies have to house the British soldiers with their own money and resources. The colonists didn't like this because of the extra taxes they had to pay.
  • Declaratory Act

    This act stated that Parliament could make laws for the American colonies at any time. The colonies didn't really think much of the Declaratory Act and they made them repeal the act.
  • Townshend Acts

    The Townshend Acts put new taxes on lead, paper, paint, tea, and glass. The colonists didn't like the Townshend Acts due to the taxes. They protested and boycotted the act.
  • Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre was a street fight between British soldiers and a mob of patriots. This massacre made the colonists angrier with the British rule and led to them fighting for independence.
  • Tea Act

    This act allowed shipments of tea to go straight to the colonies without stopping in England. This gave the East India Tea Company a monopoly over the tea market and the act put more taxes on tea. The colonists hated this act so much they dumped tons of tea into the water at the Boston Tea Party.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The colonists were fed up with the tea act so when the British East India Company brought tea to harbor that day they dump 342 chests of it into the water. This event caused the British to thicken their presence on the East Coast and caused the colonists to want to fight for independence even more.
  • Boston Port Act

    This act closed the port of Boston and demanded the colonist pay 1 million dollars in today's money for what happened during the Boston Tea Party. The colonists started to protest and boycott.
  • Coercive Act

    The Coercive Act was an act that consisted of four other acts that were meant to punish Massachusetts and they were the Port Act, the Massachusetts Government Act, the Administration of Justice Act, and the Quartering Act. This increased the colonists' hatred of the British and lead to more and more colonists resisting British rule.
  • Administration of Justice Act

    This act ensured a fair trial for British officials that were charged with capital offences. The colonists saw this act as one of the many Intolerable Acts which increased tension between the colonists and the British.
  • Massachusetts Government Act

    This act increased the governor of Massachusetts more far and wide reaching power and it repealed the Massachusettes Charter of 1691. They didn't like it becasue it altered the way parliament worked and they didn't stand for it.
  • First Continental Congress

    This was a unified act between the colonies to boycott British goods until they repealed the Intolerable Acts. They liked the First Continental Congress and they stood together against the British.
