    Route From Spain To East

    From 1497-1499, Vasco Da Gama (1460-1524) sailed out of Lisbon, Portugal, around Africa's Cape of Good Hope, to India and back. At that time many people thought that this was impossible because they didn't think that the Indian Ocean was connected to any other seas.

    First European

    Pedro Alvarez Cabral was the first European to see Brazil on April 22, 2015. Even though he was European he sailed for Portugal and claimed Brazil for them.

    Bartolomeu Dias (1457-1500) was a great Portuguese explorer who discovered Africas coast. But, in 1500 he was sailing near South America headed toward Africa when he spotted land. What he and his crew saw was Brazil. Unfortunetely, he died on this expidition when he was lost at sea near the Cape of Good Hope near Africa. He and his crew were the first Europeans to see Brazil.

    In 1500, Bartolomeu Dias sailed with Pedro Alvarez Cabral near South America headed toward Africa when they spotted land at Espirito Santo in Brazil. He called it the "Land of the True Cross"

    Shipwrecks and Fights

    In 1500, Pedro Alvarez Cabral found Brazil and claimed it for Portugal. He had 13 ships for this voyage and many of them crashed at Brazil when he landed. Then, he went to India to trade for spices, and had to fight off Muslims there. He did trade spices.

    Returning to Portugal

    After Pedro Alvarez Cabral claimed Brazil for Portugal and traded for spices in India, he returned to Portugal with only 4 of the 13 original ships. It was still a successful journey though.

    Alvise Da Cadamosto's Detailed Accounts
    Alvise Da Cadamosto (1432-1511) was a Portuguese explorer who discovered the Cape Verde Islands. He sailed for Prince Henry of Portugal. In 1455 he reached the mouth of the Gambia River. Then, in 1456 Cadamosto sailed up the Gambia River to the Geba River. Here, he tried to trade with the Africans, but was unfortunately not successful. In 1507, Cadamosto published a detailed account of his explorations, which helped people know how to get to places. The picture shows Prince Henry.

    Afonso De Albuquerque was a Portuguese explorer who sailed to the Spice Islands, trying to monopolize trade with this area.

    In 1509 Afonso De Albaquerque was appointed the Viceroy of India in 1509, which is a person who has authority for a colony.

    Calicut Destruction

    In 1510, Afonso De Albaquerque forcibly destroyed the Indian city of Calicut, and took Goa in southern India for Portugal.
