    Philip II sent the Spanish Armada. Philip II was catholic and wanted to defeat protestant England. His wife had been the half sister of Elizabeth I. Spanish treasure had been taken from ships heading back to spain. England used longer and lower ships with long range ability and defeated the Spanish Armada on July 29, 1558.     Conrad Gesner was swiss and studied medicine. He is recognized for his achievements as a compiler, encyclopedist, natural scientist and physician. In 1564, he recieved an imperial patent of nobility.     Gerardus Mercator, a flemish geographer, invented the Mercator map projector. This map projection was used to portray the round earth on flat surface. It gets rid of any distortion. He was also the first to use the word 'atlas' for a collection of maps. This event is significant because the importance of this was that maps lost the distortion and were more accurate. It destroyed the harbor at Hague and all the jutland country was immersed in water.     The Gregorian calender was adapted in Italy, Portugal, Poland and Spain. It was deigned by Luigi Lilio and named after Pope Gregory. It replaced the Julian Calender which wasnt accurate.     Galileo was born in italy. He saw a lamp swinging in a cathedral. Using his pulse to time swings, he discovered the law of the pendulum which eventually would be used to regulate clocks. this led to his study of time intervals and his idea for a pendulum clock.     In June of 1584,a Bond of Association was signed by Elizabeths supporters. It stated that it was a prevention of those who plotted against the Queen to suceed the throne if an assasination was successful. The plottters would be presecuted and killed. In November Elizabeth amended it because she did not want people punished for the action of others.
    This event is significant because it stopped thoe who supported Mary Stuart from taking part in any more plots against the Queen.

    Anthony Babbington tries to asassinate Elizabeth
    In 1586 Anthony Babbington, a former page under Mary, Queen of Scots was head of a secret society that aimed at helping Jesuit infiltrators coming into England to get rid of Elizabeth, the heretic. The Pope approved. Plot to assisinate was undercovered by Sir Francis Walsingham, her spymaster.
