Race & Class: Estefany

  • Kindergarden

First thing I noticed was that everyone around me actually spoke English and no one was like me. I did not know how to speak any English and everyone sounded like they were barking at each other.
  • Second Grade

There was show and tell where students brought items from home that represented their family. I remember a girl bringing in the brand new Barbie and brought the little playhouse with it. She said that the Barbie was like her mom and had Ken her Dad and the little dog. I brought a reboso and a stuffed bear to show how some people in Mexico carry their babies.
  • Third Grade

First time I was discriminated against and was told to go back to my country. The teacher made it sound like the situation was becoming bigger then what it actually was. Trying to brush it off as not that important. I was the only minority in the classroom representing the "exotic" world for all of the white kids in the class.
  • Middle School

My mother was concern that at the Mountain Shadow Middle School where my older cousins went where there were too many "cholos."
