  • The First Fleet

    This was when Australia became civilized land. Before they knew there were indigenous Australians, Australia was called Terra Nullius, which meant ‘no mans land’. There was only one priest on the first fleet, to preach the catholic religion. However, on the first fleet were Irish convicts as well as the British convicts, and back then the two countries did not work well together. This was due to the fact that they had different beliefs; the british were protestant and the irish were catholic.
  • Father James Dixon

    Father James Dixon arrived to Australia in 1800, and later on became Australias first official preist. Some time later he and two other preists were arrested for being a part of the 1798 irish rebellion who were transported to botany bay.

    The first Australian catholic bishop was john bedge polding who arrived in Australia in 1835, he was an English benedictine monk
  • St Mary Cathedral

    Mary MackKillop and Fr Julian Tension-Woods founded the Sisters of St. Joseph.

    A temporary St Marys Cathedral begins construction until a brand new one can be built
  • Plenary council

    The first ever Plenary Council of the Australian Catholic Church is held in Sydney. The foundation stone for St Patricks Seminary is also laid, and Archbishop Moran is announced Cardinal Priest
  • Thomas Carr

    Thomas Carr was part of the Roman Catholic church. He was installed as the 2nd Archbishop of Melbourne
  • Mary MacKillop

    Mary MacKillop passes away in the north of Sydney
  • World War 1

    The first world war has begun. Catholics became influential to the Australian Labor Party with the rise of figures such as Ben Chiffley and James Scullin.
