    George Washington went to secure the grounds of the Ohio River Valley that was claimed by both The French and English. The French went all out on Fort Necessity and George Washington surrendered. Washington was allowed by the French to go back and tell the British that the French were not giving up the land.

    Albany Plan
    Because of Washington's defeat, Benjamin Franklin figured that a single colony could not defeat a powerful military such as the French, so he advised a plan that would bring the 13 colonies together and called it the "Albany Plan". The colonies, however, feared that one of the other colonies would get to powerful, so they rejected the idea.

    The War has now OFFICALLY begun. The colonies were destroyed in the first few battles because of the lack of cooperation and cummunicataion. Because of their many defeats, the colonies started to work together and evantually started to destroy the French. The French lost and the Colonies won.

    Treaty of Paris 1763
    Britian and France signed the Treaty of Paris to end the 7 Years War in 1763. France lost the war and was kicked out of the New World, with Britain gaining all of their, the French, land. Even with a huge land claim in N.A., England had a huge debt. The colonies, however, learned that if they work together, they could take down a strong military like France.

    To keep a good relationship with the Native American, King George III passed a law forbiding colonists to settle west of the Appalachian Mts. Colonist that were already living there had to move back. Colonists were furious because they fought the French and died for this land, but the king wouldn't even let the colonists set foot on that very land.

    Stamp Act
    England passed the Stamp Act to help pay the large debt from the French & Indian War. Stamps were placed on decks of cards, newspaper, legal documents, dice, etc., and the stamps themselves cost money. This raised the prices on many goods. The Stamp Act was repealed on March 20, 1766.

    Quartering Act
    The Quartering Act forced colonist to provide British Soldiers with food and shelter. While England said the troops were their to protect the colonists, the colonists felt like the troops were there to keep an eye on the colonists for the king.

    Writs of Assistance
    The Writs of Assistance allowed British Soldiers in the colonies to search anyone and anything for smuggled goods any where and at any time.

    Townshend Acts
    The Townshend Acts placed taxes of lead, paper, glass, paint, and tea.
    Because of the many taxes, colonists boycotted and smuggled more.

    Boycotting British Goods
    The colonies started protest in response to the the Townshend Acts. Colonists felt that they should not be taxed without a representer in England to help make decisions about the colonies.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    On March 5, 1770, a small group of Red Coats were surrounded by a mob of colonist. The growing mob of colonist threw ice at the Red Coats. The Red Coats got overwhelmed and fired their guns, killing five colonist. When news of the Boston Massacre reached England, England dropped the Townshend Acts except for the tax on the tea, to show that England was still in charge.

    Committees of Correspondence
    Created by Samuel Adams as a way to communicate throughout the colonies, the Committeesof Correspondence was a committee of people that sent messages every where in the colonies.The messages were about what was going on in that colony, tax and fight wise.

    England passed an act that forced the colonists to but tea from only the East India Company because the company sold the tea at a cheap price. England thought the colonists would be happy, but the colonists were not happy because many tea selling merchants would be out of business.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    A civil disobedience conducted by the colonists because of the Tea Act. Colonies refused to by the tea until the tea reached Boston where the governor forced the colonists to buy the tea. A group of colonists dessded up as Indians went to the ship and threw 342 chests of tea into th Boston Harbor at night. The king was furious and closed the harbor.

    Intolerable Acts (Coercive Acts)
    England passed laws to punish the colonies for the Boston Tea Party. England took away Massachusetts' self government, closed the Boston Harbor, and made trials take place in England.
  • First Continental Congress

    First Continental Congress
    56 delegates from different colonies met up in Philadelphia to discuss what to do about the Intolerable Acts. The delegates decided that the colonies should get a militia together and begin training. The delegates also sent a letter and olive branch to the king asking him to repeal the acts, but King George III laughed when he recieved the letter.
