  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    -British King was poor after French Indian War -Native Americans were attacking colonists who moved West -The king made a law saying they couldn't move West after the King had told them they could if they helped with the French Indian War
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    -The king needed money so decided to tax the colonists for molasses and sugar
    -But then the colonists used their own sugar and molasses, which hurt the British East India Company
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    -Prime Minister Greenville proposed it
    -The Stamp Act was when they had pay a stamp or seal when they bought paper products
    -First time the Parliament taxed the colonists directly and colonists were none too happy
    -Repealed in 1766
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    -The name for two Acts of the British Parliament
    -The colonists had to do everything for the local government
    -Give them food, lodging, and other needed accommodations
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    -Placed taxes on:
    paint, glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea
    -Parliament did not expect colonists to protest so much
    -Repealed all taxes, except for the tea
  • British troops Arrive in Boston

    -The government sent soldiers to restore order in Boston
    -4000 troops got sent
    -Colonists had to let the soldiers stay in their house
    -Caused extra tension between colonists and Britain
  • Boston Massacre

    -Colonists wete harassing British soldiers who were at post, and a fight broke out
    -3 wounded and 2 immediately killed
    -The 3 that were wounded were later killed
    -According to the British government, they acted out of fear
    -Reenacted every year
  • Tea Act

    -Lots of smuggling was happening with the colonists and tea and Parliament wanted to put a stop to it
    -British East India had a solution for the colonists wanting lots of tea; They would make the tea cheaper
    -Many merchants and smugglers got scared this would put them out of business
  • Boston Tea Party

    -342 crates were pushed into Boston Harbor by a group called the Sons of a Liberty
    -They were disguised as Native Americans
    -The captains waited on the harbor one night not knowing that 36 people were coming
    -The colonists demanded the captain take the tea away
  • Intolerable Acts

    -Laws that were passed to punish the colonists
    -Boston Port Act: Couldn’t use wares, and merchandise, at the town, and within the harbour, of Boston,
    -Massachusetts Government Act: Regulating the government of Massachusetts Bay in New England
    -Administration of Justice Act: No real justice for riots and executions
    -Quebec Act: Province of Quebec becoming part of North America

    -Also known as the Philadelphia Congress
    -Predecessor to the first congress
    -Same people that Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence
    -Fun Fact: My mom's side of the family signed the Declaration of Independence (Josiah Bartlett)
  • Battles of Lexington and Concord

    Battles of Lexington and Concord
    -Tensions had been rising between the British and the colonists
    -Paul Revere and others sounded the alarm that the British were coming to seize Concord
    -Noone knows who shot the first shot
    -8 were killed, and 10 were badly wounded
    -British were forced to retreat to Boston
    -Fun Fact: My great great great great great great great great grandparents, (My mom and I calculated how many greats there were) fought in this battle
  • George Washington is appointed Commander-in-Chief

    George Washington is appointed Commander-in-Chief
    -George Washington first worked for the British
    -He had the command of the Continental Army in Cambridge
    -After eight years, he resigned from Commander in Chief on December 23, 1783
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    -Actually launched on Breed's hill
    -The Patriots lost, but they showed they could take on the redcoats
    -British sacrificed double the numbers of the Patriots
    -British knew that they were going to lose
    -Gave a confidence boost to the Patriots
    -Fun Fact: My great great great great great great great great grandparents, (My mom and I calculated how many greats there were) fought in this battle

    -Great Britain recognized the independence of the United States
    -After the battle Yorktown, there were just peaceful talks
