    Group of nobles led uprising in protest of Nicholas I taking throne over his brother, Constantine. Failed from lack of support and poor organization. Showed that people's loyalty to czar was eroding. Gavve inspiration to future generations.

    The Emancipation of Russian Serfs
    Alexander II issues degree that abolished practice of serfdom. Serfdom in Europe ened in 1400s-1500s. Serfs allowed to buy land, marry and own businesses. Although serfs were free, there were lots of economic hardships because serfs were forced to buy poor land and go into dept as a result.

    The Social Democratic Party Splits (Mensheviks and Bolsheviks)
    Social Democratic Party was a revolutionary party that wanted to overthrow the czar. Met in 1903 and decided the path they would take in mission to reform/revoltuionize Russia. Group that had more united in common goals now split (Mensheviks and Bolsheviks). Both go on to fight a bloody civil war in Russia.

    Russia and Japan were at war over control of Manchulia (region of China) and Korea. Japan easily won the war. Defeat shows declining power of Russia. Russia had poor organization/leadership of Russian military. Distrust in Russia grew.

    Workers in Russia were organizing themselves with goals of more. Protesters (led by Fr. Georgy Gapon) maked in Winter Palace to present demands. Cheif orded police to shoot the protesters. Nicholous II then earned the name "Bloody NIcholous".

    Lenin reformed the Russian government. The Russian government was very weak and Bolsheviks then took power and turns into communist state (Lenin).

    Russia troubled with fighting Germany in WWI and loses land such as Ukraine, Poland, and Baltic territories. In result, most Russians are not happy and split causing a civil war.

    Civil war finally erupts. Cheka (secret police) lead terror to try and erase Bolsheviks from Russia. Also, Germany destroyed much of Russia leaving about 6 million Russians dead. Then the Bolsheviks tried to expand Russia. After Lenin, Stalin became the leader of Russia.
