    This painting depicts children at play in 1870's rural America. During the Gilded Age, the great social and economic divide started in America, but children did not know any better. Homer captured the children's innocence and ignorance to the divide taking over the United States at this time. Homer gained recognition during the Gilded Age because of his art depicting Union Soldiers during the Civil War. Homer was known as one of the great artist the influenced the art created during this era.

    The construction of the Brooklyn Bridge was one of the great engineering feats of its time. It connects the borough on Manhattan and Brooklyn. The bridge is one of the most iconic and recognizable images of New York. Construction began in 1869 and the bridge was finalized in 1883. It was designed by a German immigrant by the name of John Augustus Roebling. The construction of the bridge depicts the creative spirit of America post-war during the Gilded Age.

One of the many great artistic and engineering feats of the Gilded Age, the statue was a dedication from the people of France to the people of America. The Statue of Liberty is an outstanding depiction of America's immigrant population. Many Americans today can trace their roots back to someone from this great era. The statue was on the first sights seen by European immigrant coming into NY.

A labor demonstration was happening in Haymarket Square in Chicago when a bomb went off and killed seven police officers and four civilians. This event has had profound influence on labor relations not only Chicago, but nationwide and worldwide. The event helped the push for an eight hour work day. Two of the most known works of art that derived from this incident are the Police Monument and the Haymarket Martyrs' Monument.

    RMS Titanic
    The RMS Titanic was another great depiction of the Gilded era mentality. The wealthy were inclined to portray their wealth and the RMS Titanic was the era's ultimate show of opulence. It was also another one of the great engineering feats of the early 1900's. Deemed as "indestructible" due to it being made entirely out of steel and its size, people of the day marveled when it was launched. The building of this great ship made the Irish feel proud of building such a feat until its fateful day.

The Ashcan artist were more interested in painting everyday life instead of extravagant art works. The purpose and meaning of their artworks was to show what New York life was really like. They created are for "life's sake" instead of "art's sake". This new movement created numerous painting that depicted people walking the streets and what the citizens of the city did daily.

    The painting above is a symbol of the ever changing world society was facing. The Gilded Era was coming to an end as a new kind of war was being fought in Europe. John Singer Sargent's painting shows the struggle of soldiers fighting this new war with more advanced and modernized weapons that were creating large amount of casualties. The painting also depicts the camaraderie the soldiers developed during these trying and difficult times that helped everyone get through what was to come next.
