Greek, Hero of Alexandria, invented a rocket-type device called an aeolipile. It used steam as the gas to propel the rocket. Hero placed a sphere above a water kettle. A fire under the kettle converted the water into steam, and the gas traveled through pipes to the sphere. -

The Life of Ptolemy
ptolemy: around the year of 140 A.D. Cladius Ptolemy developed geocentric theory. a theory that stated that the planet earth is the center of the universe and that all other planets revolved around it. this theory was proven and disproven many times but the current belief throughout earth’s population says otherwise. the more common belief today is referred to as heliocentric theory and places the sun to the center of the universe. Ptolemy died in the year 168 AD. -

First Real Rocket
The date reporting the first use of true rockets was in 1232 AD. At the time, the Chinese and the Mongols were at war. These fire-arrows were a not complex form of a solid-propellant rocket. A cylinder,
closed on one end, which held gunpowder. The opposite end was open and the tube was connected to a large, straight stick. When the gunpowder was lit, the rapid burning of the gunpowder created fire, gas, and smoke that escaped out the open end and produced a thrust. -

Sputnik was the first man made satellite in history. Many people were surprised that the Russians had the technology to control sputnik, and could successfully launch the satellite. Some people think of this as the begginning of the space race. -

On this day the soviets launched another satellite, Sputnik II. Along with the launch of Sputnik II a dog, named laika, was sent into space. Laika survived only a day or two because of tempurature problems. -

Neil Armstrong was an american astronaut and the first person to walk on the moon.He became an astronaut in 1962, Apollo 11 was Neil Armstrong's second flight, in 1969. His words when he stepped on the moon were “Thats one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.” -
