  • Birth of the Internet

    In September 1969 the first host computer was connected at UCLA. One month later, two computers were connected, and the first host-to-host message was sent. By the end of 1969 four host computers had been connected and the internet began to grow.
  • First E-mail

    Ray Tomlinson sent the first e-mail between two computers on the ARPANET.
  • National Science Foundation Role

    The NSF started the growth of internet within universities and to companies. Between the beginning of 1986 and the end of 1987 the number of networks grows from 2,000 to nearly 30,000. By January 1989 the number of hosts increased to 80,000 then to 130,000 in July, and over 160,000 in November.
  • World Wide Web

    Tim Berners-Lee developed the world wide web (www).
  • Mosaic

    Mosaic, the first Web browser was released.
  • Mosaic Communications

    The company, Mosaic Communcations, based on the web browser Mosaic was started. This was later named Netscape.
  • AOL, ComuServe, Netcom, and AT&T

    The first large Internet Service Providers (ISPs) begin offering Internet access to the masses. The first of these were AOL, ComuServe, Netcom, and AT&T
  • Internet Explorer

    Microsoft released the first version of Internet Explorer
  • Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)

    ICANN was created, its mission is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global Internet.
