    The first gold was found in the rise above Canadian Creek at the base of Poverty Point, which is now known as Golden Point. The first gold was discovered by James Regan. It was in late August, in between the 21st and the 24th.

    James Scobie was killed outside the Eureka Hotel. Suspicions were that it was the publican and his rumored business partner responsible for the crime. His death further convinced the diggers of corruption in high places.

    The Eureka Hotel Fire
    An estimated 5000 diggers gathered at the place of the murder of James Scobie, in protest of the acquittal of James Bentley, after he was let off by an allegedly corrupt magistrate. The mob got angry and set the Eureka hotel alight.

    More than 500 men gathered on Bakery Hill and swore their allegiance to the Southern Cross.

    The Eureka Stockade
    It was dawn, when 276 military and police men attacked the Eureka Stockade. 3 soldiers and 22 diggers were killed in the battle, others died later due to their wounds.

    By June 1855, new laws took out the gold license system. The new laws allowed miners to frame their own mining laws and gave them a vote and representations in the parliament.
