  • January 1999: Rocket Summer

    In the first chapter we see that a ship is taking off from earth to mars in winter.

    This section shows an underlying theme of racism in the book. It prepares us for the arrival of the Earth men before they arrive and shows the abusive relationship Ylla is in.

  • August 1999: The Earth Men

    When the Earth men arrive on Mars they were expecting to be celebrated (unlike any white man today). When the martians are rude to them they end up in this hall and then they find out it's an insane asylum. Martians are also in this hall and they all state to be from Earth as well. Mr. XXX thinks he is hallucinating so he shoots the captain and then the other two shipmates and then kills himself.
  • August 1999: The Summer Night

    On mars Martians are acting weird and female martians are singing in a strange languages (english) due to the telepathy received from the rocket.
  • April 2000: The Third Expedition

    In the third expedition to Mars the humans arrive on mars and they see that mars is quite similar to Earth. But they are being hypnotized by the martians so they believe that the martians are the old crew that arrived on mars. But then the martians kill them.
  • June 2001: And the Moon Still as Bright

    This chapter follows the fourth expedition to mars where they find all of the martians dead due to the chicken pox. This makes one of the crew members go crazy and he starts to kill everyone. Then the captain has to kill the insane man even though he agrees with him.
  • December 2001: The Green Morning

    When a young man arrives on mars he passes out due to the lack of oxygen and he is told to go home but he does not want to so he makes a plan to grow a large amount of trees on mars. Once this has been approved he is given a motercycle bike and a bunch of seeds to plant. So the next day he drives around on his little motorcycle bike and plants the seeds and then it starts to rain and the trees grow abnormally fast and make greenery everywhere.
  • February 2002: The Locusts

    This chapter is about how many ships are coming to mars so they use the metaphor locust to express the drastic amount of ships coming to mars.
  • October 2002: The Shore

    In this chapter we see how frantic everyone is to go to mars in cities and suburbs. We also figure out Americans are the only ones colonizing mars, and this shows how frantic and chaotic our world is.
  • October 2002: The Shore

    In this short chronicle we look at the “waves” of men who came to Mars. It goes into explaining that there were two waves of men who came to Mars, and all of them were from America. The rest of the world is caught up in war while America is taking over and even colonizing the new planet.
  • April 2003: The Musicians

    Young human boys on Mars make an adventure and a game out of exploring old Martian towns and make music with the dead carcasses that remain.
  • June 2003: Way in the Middle of the Air

    In this chapter all of the black people get onto a spaceship and leave in a ship for mars. They all leave in the south and since this book was written before the Civil Rights Movements it shows what it would have looked like if the south was still segregated.
  • June 2004: The Naming of Names

    This chapter shows the political, economic, and social structure has started to be shaped just like Earth. In this chapter we see the Author telling us his views that even if we could start over we would stick to our old ways because they are familiar not because they are effective.
  • August 2005: The Old Ones

    In this chapter we assume everyone has been shipped to Mars but we go back to earth and hear about the elderly who were just starting to go to mars so they can join the rest of the people.
  • September 2005: The Martian

    In this chapter we see not only the mind powers of the martians but how they use them for good, or at least temporary gain for the humans. A family moves to Mars who recently lost their son. So one of the martians convinces the family that they are the son so they stop mourning his death but once they find out it was the martians and not actually their kid they go back to mourning.
  • November 2005: The Luggage Store

    When the americans get to mars they immediately start to colonize it but as soon as they have made significant progress they get word that Earth is about to have a war attack and everyone needs to head back to help with war efforts. By the end of the war no one is on mars.
  • November 2005: The Watchers

    During the night on mars earth looks like it is exploding in front of the martians settlers eyes. But actually a morse code message was sent to them that told them that the atomic stockpile of Australia prematurely explode and would wipe out the continent
  • December 2005: The Silent Towns

    In this chapter we see only two people still on mars, a man and a woman, but the man doesn't find her attractive and doesn't like her so he runs off by himself again.
  • April 2026: The Long Years

    In this chapter we fast forward twenty years after the war back to mars to see Hathaway and his family. Then a small spaceship arrives, Hathaway dies, and the crew on the ship finds out his family died twenty years ago and he built robots to replace them.
  • October 2026: The Million-Year Picnic

    In this chapter, a single family has escaped Earth to go to Mars. Once they arrive and set up, they decide to go on a fishing trip, the man blows up the rocket to prevent going back. After boating down the canal, they decided upon the city that would be their new home. In the end, they saw what was left of the Martian race.
