  • Virginia

    Virginia
    First capital was Jamestown.
    It had rich and fertile soil for farming.
  • New York

    Henry Hudson claimed New York for the Dutch.
    The English took over when the Dutch could not fight against the English.
  • New Hampshire

    New Hampshire was where may Puritans went to obtain religious freedom. John Mason was the owner of New Hampshire.
  • Connecticut

    Connecticut was the site of the Pequot war between the Pequot Indians and the English. Connecticut was founded by the Puritan Thomas Hooker.
  • Delaware

    Delaware has ben controlled by four different countries the Dutch, Swedish, Britain, and America. Delaware was founded by Peter Minuit.
  • North Carolina

    North Carolina
    King Charles II granted the Carolina Charters to 8 Lord Proprietors in witch the settled land was split into North and South. The 8 Lord Proprietors were appointed to govern North Carolina.
  • South Carolina

    South Carolina
    South Carolina separated from North Carolina in 1712. The colony established self-government but some people (called loyalist) wanted to stay a part of Great Britian for commercial reasons.
  • Georgia

    James Oglethorpe was given a charter to found the Georgia colony. The Georgia colony acted as a buffer zone for the English to the North and the Spanish to the South.

    Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn

    New Jersey was settled by the Dutch and Swedish. Most people were either Catholics or Jewish.

    Massachusetts was founded when the Pilgrims where blown of course and landed north of the Jamestown colony in Massachusetts. The first written body of government was written by the Pilgrims in Massachusetts and it was called the Mayflower Compact.

    Maryland was owned by Lord Baltimore who was the owner of Maryland. Maryland was a safe zone for Catholics which where being prosecuted back in England.
  • Rhode Island

    Rhode Island
    Rhode Island was the smallest of the original 13 colonies. Rhode island had complete religious freedom.
