    The Decembrist Revolt
    3,000 Russian protesters staged an uprising against czar Nicholas I taking the throne after czar Alexander I died. They tried to overthrow the czarist government to set up a constitutional monarchy. However, the rebellion was crushed easily. A trial was held for them resulting in the execution, imprisonment, or banishment to Siberia for the protesters.

    Nicholas II Becomes Czar of Russia
    After Alexander III died, Nicholas II took the throne. Czar Nicholas II was the czar of Russia from 1894 to his forced abdication in 1917. He was a ruler that tried his best to make reforms but did so in a time when Russia no longer wanted a czar.

    War broke out due to Russia and Japan's fight for dominance in Korea and Manchuria. Japan easily defeated Russia because supplies and reinforcements were scarce for Russia. In the end, Russia had to succeed land to Japan.

    Protesters came to the Winter Palace to ask the czar for more freedoms. The czar ordered troops to fire on the crowd. Hundreds of demonstrators were killed or wounded. Because of this event, more revolts were held to try to end the czar's reign.

    Russia fought with Britain and France against Germany and Austria-Hungary in World War I. The long, strenuous war took a toll on Russia. Its industries and transportation systems were underdeveloped leaving Russia's army with no way to get supplies to troops even if they had the supplies.

    Riots in Petrograd broke out over the shortage of food and the absence of peace. The government tried to put a stop to it, but troops sent to fire on the crowd refused. Some troops even joined in on the protests. These riots and protests led to Czar Nicholas II abdicating the throne.

    Riots in Petrograd broke out. Czarist officials thoughout Russia were being overthrown to make way for a new Russian era. Russian government forced Czar Nicholas II to abdicate, or give up the throne.

    Civil war started between the Bolsheviks who wanted communism to govern Russia, and groups that wanted other forms of government such as democratic socialism, capitalism, and czarist government. The Bolsheviks were much better organized with the Red Army than other groups and won control over Russia in 1922.

    The U.S.S.R. was a communist country created by the revelutionary group, the Bolsheviks. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics consisted of Russia and mostly other countries that were once a part of the Russian Empire.

    Vladinir Lenin adopted Karl Marx's ideas to form communism. Before Lenin died he was worried about Joseph Stalin becoming too powerful. When Lenin did die from a stroke, that is exactly what happened.
