    In the beginning of the 20th century was a era with a rapid economic growth and industrialization. Because of the U.S higher wages was millions of immigrants attraced to come and help the country. The USA joined WW1 in 1917.

    During the 1920s automobile, the telephone, electricity, the motion pictures and more industrial growth - stock market crash 1929.

    1930s

    Stock market crash = great depression. Decade of poverty, struggle and massive unemployment. In 1939 WWII broke out.

    1940s

    Pearl Harbor - attacked December 7. 1941 by Japan. The U.S joined the war on the side of the Allies.

    Decade of growth in all areas. All household had refrigerators, television sets and hoovers. car were becomming common.
    Cold war between world's two superpowers.

    Decade with: War and Change.
    Era with: Civil Rights Movement (intensified demands for equal rights for everyone), the space race(Astronaut Neil Armstrong - first man on the moon, 1962), the Kennedys, the cold war, the Vietnam War (first war that people protested about) and the hippies (make love, not war).

    Movements that started in the 60s continued in the 70s: civil rights minorities, women's rights and the END of the Vietnam war. Environmental issues became important.
    The recession in the steel industry created problems for the industrialized areas of the Midwest.
    The steel belt = the rust belt.

    Ronald Reagan (president 1981-1989) - conservative USA.
    Cold war - Soviet Union. Supported - anti-communist movements around the globe.
    Berlin wall = symbol of the "iron curtain", 1989 came down.
    MTV and the music video, Michael Jackson and Madonna.

    Short war - Middle East (operation Desert storm) = Protect Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, because of oil.
    Throughout the decade: better economically, Immigration increased = Latin America.
    Internet and PC = Information Revolution.
    reality TV became popular.

    The 21st first century

    9/11- 2001= "the day that changed the world", 3000 died, 4 plane - hijacked. 2 - the twin tower on Manhatten, 1 - pentagon, 1 - missed it's target and crashed.
    U.S + allies attacks Taliban.
    The worldwide economic recession hit US hard = millions of people struggling, many lost their jobs.
    2008 = Barack Obama (first African American president) = gave hope!
