  • Missouri Compromise (1820)

    To keep the senate equal, Missouri became an enslaved state, while Maine became a slave-free state.
  • Fugitive slave act (1850)

    All of the people were required to catch runaway slaves. There was a 1,000$ fine and jail if a person let the slave go and let him/her be free.
  • Compromise of 150

    No slave policies were changed during the compromise but some people thought the compromise should have changed the policies.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852)

    Harriot Stowe published his book to show how horrible slavery was/is and how it should be changed.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854)

    Douglas set up a proposal for a bill to set up a new government for the Louisiana Purchase. He divided this into Nebraska and Kansas. In the states, they would decide about slavery.
  • South Carolina secedes (1854)

    There was a lack of unity and the people left the country of South Carolina.
  • Dred Scott case (1857)

    A slave named Dred Scott had been transferred to two different masters even though he was supposed to be free because he was living in the North.
  • John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry (1859)

    Abolitionist John Brown led a crowd to Virginia to control personnel.
  • Election of 1860

    The Democratic convention in South Carolina lacked unity and ended up electing a new president, Abraham Lincoln.
