    World War One
    The causes of World War One was Alliances, Nationalism, Imperialism, Militarism, the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the sinking of Lusitania, and the Zimmerman Telegram. The United States didn't enter until April 6, 1917 when Germany sent a telegram to Mexico stating they wanted to invade the U.S. and Mexico could get Texas, but the U.S. had intercepted this and heard it all. Russia dropped out of the war by November 1917, and the war ended on November 11, 1918.

    During the War
    During World War One many women were given jobs, the Espionage Act was created in 1917 and the Sedition Act was created in 1918. Because there were so many men off at war, the women were encouraged to work in the factories. The Espionage Act made it illegal to interfere with the enemy, give false reports, and interfere with war effort. The Sedition Act made it illegal to speak against war publicly, you could go to prison for being anti-war.

    The roaring twenties was just after the war, everyone was happy and it was one big party. The women I feel had a better time during this because they were more open, they dressed differently, went out, smoked, danced, etc. But because of uneven distribution of income, loss of export sales, mistakes by federal reserve, came the stock market crash of 1929.

    Rise of Dictators
    Mussolini was the Fascist dictator of Italy, he supported industrialists, landowners, and the catholic church, he wanted to boost the economy and make communism illegal. Stalin was the Communist dictator of Soviet Union, the people had to love him or they died, he imposed concentration camps and targeted all political rivals. Hitler was the Nazi dictator of Germany, he had a hate for Jews, he promised to end the Great Depression in Germany.
  • Civil Right Movement

    Civil Right Movement
    Rosa Parks had refused to give up her bus seat to a white man and was arrested, the NAACP heard about this and used her case to organize a boycott of city buses. Freedom Riders was a group of black and white volunteers that wanted to draw attention to ending segregation. The Student Nonviolence Coordinating Committee held sit ins in public places, and dealt with all the words the white people were saying, all the food that got dumped on them, and the spitting and hitting they did.

    Vietnam
    The French wanted to control Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh then began a communist rebellion. The draft happened during this time in America, thousands of young men were to enter the war, most were working class, but if you were in college you were able to pass. The Vietcong used booby traps, ambushes, and other guerrilla tactics to kill many Americans by surprise.
  • JFK and LBJ

    JFK and LBJ
    John F. Kennedy was elected in 1960, started the "New Frontier". The space race also took place at this time, it was a race to see if the U.S. or Russia could get to space first. November 1963 JFK is assassinated, in Texas, Lyndon B. Johnson is now president. LBJ was an excellent president domestically and more successful than JFK in reforms.

    MLK and the Movement
    Many leaders of the bus boycotts and other movement activities were African American church ministers like Martin Luther King. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, giving access to public facilities and required private employers to end discrimination in the workforce. Voting Rights Act of 1965 was a Law that suspended literacy tests and other discriminating Jim Crow law practices that restricted African Americans from voting.
  • Riots of the 1960s

    Riots of the 1960s
    The Watts Riot, 1965, rioters in L.A. burned and looted entire neighbors and destroyed about $45 million in property damages, 34 killed and 900 injured. The Detroit Riot, 1967, was the worst riot in the country with burning, looting, and fights between rioters and U.S. soldiers. They had $250 million in property damage, 43 were dead, over 1,000 wounded, 4,000 fires, and 1,300 building destroyed. When M.L.K was assassinated in 1968 set off mourning and riots in about 100 cities.
  • President Nixon

    President Nixon
    Nixon was a "Law and Order" type president, he had tough laws against drug and pushed mandatory sentencing laws. Nixon reduced federal funding. There was a break in to a Democratic Convention to gain information, Nixon tried to cover it up by destroying evidence and having people give false testimonies. Nixon also gave false testimonies and refused to give up the tapes holding evidence, and fired whoever asked for them. The judiciary voted to impeach him, but he resigned.
