Treatment of Blacks Throughout American History

  • The Start Of Slavery

    The Start Of Slavery
In the year of 1619, slaves were brought to Jamestown, Viginia in order to increase production rates of crops such as tabacco. These slaves were treated in a very harsh manner, and were often beaten by their masters if they did not accomplish certain tasks in very short amounts of time. As most people know, blacks were not treated equally, and were often treated like animals. ("Slavery in America")

Shipment of Slaves Across The Seas

During this period of time, blacks were shipped from ares around the world like Africa to the United States on ships that had hardly enough area to stay alive. Many blacks died on these ships by various causes. Some died from infectious diseases and some even died from starvation on these ships. Others died from malnutrition. The blacks had no other choice then to go on these ships and become slaves, so it was still very harsh for them. ("SLAVERY IN AMERICA")

    Segregation of Blacks

Throughout this time period, blacks were heavily segregated in the American society. Although they were "free", they wee not treated equally in society. Throughout this period blacks were forced to use different areas than whites for most things. They used different water fountains, restrooms, public transportation, and public places like hotels. The areas designated for blacks were of much less quality, often too bad to even use. Until the 20 century blacks had their own schools! ("SLAVERY")
  • Emancipation Proclomation

    Emancipation Proclomation
The Emancipation Proclomation was signed in the beginning of 1863. This was supposed to free all slaves from slavery, but there was an issue with this. The slaves in the South were very uneducated, and probably would not understand that they were freed if somebody told them. Although slaves were supposed to be freed, most slave owners did not free their slaves because they knew that nothing would happen. This improved the living quality of slaves by a little, but not much. ("SLAVERY IN AMERICA")

    After the Emancipation Proclomation

The time period between when the Emancipation Proclomation was made and when they were actually freed, they actually improved their living standards because slave owners did not harm the slavs as much because if they were found with slaves, let alone injured ones, they would have been in big trouble with the authorities. • The Slaves Are Actually Free

    The Slaves Are Actually Free
Union soldiers arrived in galveston to declare the end of the Civil War on June 19, 1865. The Union soldiers went through the South and finally freed nearly 200,000 slaves.Tconditions, since if the owners were caught and their slaves were harmed, the owners would be in huge trouble with the authorities. • I Have A Dream Speech

    I Have A Dream Speech
Most people in the American society have heard about the "I Have A Dream speech", given by Martin Luther King in 1963. Although this didn't immediatly change the equality of blacks, this was a step to the integration of blacks into our normal society. Afer this speech, whites began to understand the situation and side with the blacks. Then, the majority of people wanted to stop segregating blacks. Little by little, motivated by MLK's speech, blacks were less segregated. ("SLAVERY IN AMERICA")

    Current Society

In the 21st century, African Americans have achieved equality among other races in American society. The United states doesn't have segregation anymore, & slavery is illegal. However, other conflicts are occuring. Much of society is becoming racist by associating blacks wih crime. Many immigrants from Africa are being bullied, and called rude things such as "Mr.Ebola". Although it seems our soicety is equal, blacks get treated in an unfair way, and are patronized by whites,("SLAVERY IN AMERICA")
