    THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION
    The Industrial Revolution was a period where science and technology transformed societies and American lives during the mid-late 18th century and the early 19th century. Products that were made by hand turned into production in mass quantities in various industries like textiles, iron, automobiles, and food. Countless entrepreneurs built an empire and shaped the way America is today such as J.P. Morgan, Henry J. Heinz, Milton S. Hershey, Henry Ford, and much more. 1850s - 1900s

    Slavery has shaped the South economically and culturally - slavery was a major aspect of American society.
    -by 1860, there were 4 million slaves in the United States
    -slaveholders would not think of their slaves as human, the slaves themselves did not think of themselves as human
    -slaves were property - coerced labor that relied on intimidation and brutality

    PRESIDENCY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN
    During the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, the North/Union states have fought against the South/confederate states. "One eighth of the whole population were colored slaves, not distributed generally over the union, but localized in the souther part of it. These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest..." The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863 - the purpose was to have enslaved people join the Union to win the Civil War, in return, those slaves would be free.

    THE UNION HAS WON
    The North won the Civil War due to various reasons as the Union had many advantages. The North had more soldiers than the South (22 million soldiers vs 9 million soldiers); out of the 9 million soldiers, 3.5 million soldiers were slaves. The North also manufactured more than 90% of all goods in the U.S. such as textiles, boots, iron, firearms, etc. Although the North produced more goods that were advanced than the South, the South had better military leaders and generals.

    THE STATUE OF LIBERTY
    Edouard de Laboulaye (French activist & political intellectual) proposed that a statue should be built for the U.S. - a statue representing liberty, freedom, and alliance with France. The statue was designed and built by Auguste Bartholdi who called it "Liberty Enlightening the World."
    Although Bartholdi thought the island was small during his visit, he believed that it was the perfect location for every ship entering the New York harbor can see - the "gateway to America".

    The KKK, known as the Ku Klux Klan was founded on December 24, 1865. The KKK is a terrorist organization that targeted Republicans, both black and white Americans, beating and murdering men and women in order to intimidate and prevent anyone from voting.

    CIVIL RIGHTS BILL OF 1866 - 14TH AMENDMENT
    The Civil Rights Bill was introduced in 1866; the purpose of this bill was to have every person born on U.S. soil was to be a U.S. citizen and establish nationwide equality before the law, despite one's race/ethnicity. 14th Amendment:
    -citizenship
    -equal protection
    -Bill of Rights in all states
