ARPA is founded.
ARPA, the Advanced Research Projects Agency was created in 1958 as a part of the US army and was tasked with creating a way for the armed services to effetively communicate with each other over long distances. The original driving force behind this was the launch of Sputnik by the Russians. -
Intergalactic Computer Network Conceptualized
J.C.R Licklider had the original ideas that evenftually led to him publishing a paper about the intergalatic computer network, which was the driving force behind the creation of DARPA and the eventual creation of the networking protocols and ideas. -
J. C. R. Licklider becomes head of ARPA
J.C.R Licklider became the head of ARPA after publishing his paper on the Intergalatic Computer Network. This wasn't the cause but they were able to both come together after he became the leader. -
First Packet Switching Demonstration at the NPL
The first public demonstration of packet switching was performed at the National Physics Laboratory in England. This was the first time that information was ever sent from one computer to another across a network. -
ARPANET is created.
During 1969 the network known as ARPANET was created and started to be used. It was a network comprised of computers across several universities in America. -
BBN Technologies are awarded the ARPANET Contract
BBN Technologies put in a bid to build the ARPANET Network and won the contract. They began building it and finished work around December of 1969, where the network was initialized and begun to be used. -
First Message over ARPANET was sent.
The very first message to be sent over ARPANET essentially failed as the message was supposed to be login. Due to an error, it only transmitted "lo" and then during their second test they were able to transmit the whole word. -

Newsgroups and Bulletin Boards become popular
Newgroups and Bulletin Boards became a very popular way of people sharing information over networks. Newgroups were popular far into the 90's but eventually started dying out as Forums became much more easily accessable and people realised that they were much easier to moderate content on. Bulletin Boards quickly fell into disuse due to this aswell, although this can be accredited to Web Browsers being created too. -
Email is introduced
In 1971 the first email was sent and it quickly became a form of communication that spread and became popular as more and more people started using networked computers. -
Queen Elizabeth sends her first email
The Queen of England sent her first email sometime during 1976. -
International Packet Switched Service
The International Packet Switched Service was a combination of the efforts of the UK and the USA to create a global network. It quickly expanded to cover Hong Kong, Australia and Canada and by 1990 it was one of the largest infrastructures in the world of networking. -
First use of the word "Internet"
The word "Internet" was first used. This was due to the French Scientific and Educational network known as CYCLADES coining the term due to its network layout as they had three networks interlinked with each other. Interlinked Networks and so therefore, Internetting/Internet. -
The US Army decides that TCP/IP is the standard for military networking
The US Army decided that TCP/IP would be the set of protocols used for all networked military communications in order to improve efficiency and allow communications to be easily picked up and read by any networked computers that they were intended for. -
TCP/IP & NSF
NSFNET is created. This become the worldwide standard for networking usage and connects thousands of people together along with the TCP/IP protocols becoming the primary ways of communication through networking. -
DNS is established
DNS or Domain Naming System is established in 1984. This is the system that allows websites to be hosted in text, rather than numbers for IP addresses. This works as an easy to remember system that allows people to more efficiently navigate to websites. Although, at this time, web browers didn't exist. -
"Cyberspace" coined as a word
This was the first noted use of the word cyberspace as a way of referring to the networking space, or, as it's known in the future, the internet. -
10,000 Hosts.
Sometime during 1987 the world reached a total of 10,000 interconnected hosts. -
World Wide Web invented
The World Wide Web is essentially the web as we know it now and went on to supercede NSFNET. -
NSFNET supercedes ARPANET
In the very early 90's NSFNET surpassed ARPANET in terms of usage and ARPANET quickly fell into disuse compared to NSFNET shortly afterwards, eventually becoming defunct. -

First Commerical Dial-up
Compusrv offered the first commercial dial-up services that were widely available to the public. Before that, it was possible to get dial-up services, but they were only available to businesses or private networks that only accessed certain locations. -
World Wide Web & CERN
The World Wide Web became the main infrastructure and form of connection to networks and eventually supercedes NSFNET. Tim Berners Lee at CERN developed HTML as a way of sharing scientific information. This helped the growth of the internet greatly. -
Mosaic becomes the first widely used browser
Mosaic was one of the first web browsers and quickly became the first popular one that was used by a large percentage of the internet enabled market. -
First Webcrawler Launched.
Webcrawlers are special bots that search through the internet and index websites on a server for quik browsing and retrieval for web search clients. -
Netscape Web Browser Launched.
Netscape was a very popular browser that lasted for a significant amount of time before slowly dying down in terms of popularity. It quickly became more popular than Mosaic. -
16 Million Internet Users Worldwide
The internet reached 16 million users across the world sometime during December 1995. -

There are several movements that wish to censor the information on the internet andthey have recieved an incredible amount of negative backlash from the general public due to the policies that governments across the world wish to implement. Services such as VoIP, Blogs and Webcasts have allowed people to more easily convey thoughts and opinions. -
The internet is taken into Space
NASA News Article On the 22nd of January 2010 NASA upgraded one of their satellites in order to enable it access to the world wide web through an incredibly long range wireless network that relayed information from a console on the space station to a computer on the surface of the Earth.
