  • Sugar Act

    This tax enacted by Britain on the colonists taxed commodities like molasses, rum, and lumber.
  • Stamp Act

    This was the first direct tax on the American colonists. It taxed all commercial and legal papers, newspapers, cards, dice, and the like.
  • Declaration of Rights Written

    The Stamp Act prompted nine of the thirteen American colonies to meet in New York and write the Declaration of Rights as a protest to taxation without representation.
  • Repeal of Stamp Act

    British Parliament repeals the Stamp Act.
  • Townshend Acts

    Taxes are levied on the states over various items. All are later repealed, with the exception of the tax on tea.
  • Boston Massacre

    This is seen as the first battle of the revolution. Boston troops fire their guns into a mob, killing five colonists.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Josiah Quincy and Samuel Adams, along with several other Patriots, board English ships and toss the entire tea shipment overboard.
  • Britain's Response to the Tea Party

    In response to the Boston Tea Party, Britain closed the Boston port.
  • Intolerable Acts

    British Parliament passed the Intolerable Acts, including the Quartering Act, which allowed British soldiers to live in colonist's homes
  • First Continental Congress

    Held in Philadelphia, twelve colonies attended and their representatives petitioned Britain to cease their new regulations.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence and the committee signed it.
  • Battle at Princeton, New Jersey

    General Washington led 7,000 troops to victory at Princeton, New Jersey.
  • Valley Forge Encampment

    11,000 troops are marched into Valley Forge by George Washington.
  • American Loss at Georgia

    American troops lost battle at Savannah, Georgia.
  • Final Major Battle on American Soil

    Taking place near Williamsburg, Washington and Rochambeau joined forces and defeated the British. Ended 10/16
  • U.S. Independence Recognized

    British Parliament recognized U.S. Independence.
  • Official End of War

    Congress ratifies the preliminary peace treaty.
  • George Washington's Election

    George Washington is elected as president.
  • John Adams Elected

    Adams defeats Jefferson and is elected as the second president of the United States.
