Week 5 - 19th Century (1801-1900)

  • Marie Bracquemond

    Marie Bracquemond
On the Terrace at Sèvres (1880). In this piece you see 2 ladies, most likely from a higher class judging by their outfits, and a gentleman. The difference between the man and the ladies is the expression on their faces. The gentleman looks pleased while the ladies look quite sad and uninterested, and despite the bright colors used in the piece the tone of the painting isn’t a happy one.
  • Ellen Thesleff

    Ellen Thesleff
Echo (1891). In this piece Thesleff used brighter colors for a happier tone, the girl in the piece seems to be gazing at something that isn’t on the painting, and whatever it is has seemed to make her happy. From the clothes she is wearing the girl comes from a working-class family, we also see she is holding something in her left hand, perhaps she is doing some yard work. During this time period children from lower class families were put to work to help support the family.
