North West Ordiance
The ordinance created the Northwest Territory, the first organized territory of the United States, from lands beyond the Appalachian Mountains, between British Canada and the Great Lakes to the north and the Ohio River to the south. The upper Mississippi River formed the Territory's western boundary. It was the response to multiple pressures: the westward expansion of American settlers, tense diplomatic relations with Great Britain and Spain, violent confrontations with Indians. -
Louisiana Purchase
It happened becuase The Americans thought that Napoleon might withdraw the offer at any time, preventing the United States from acquiring New Orleans, so they agreed and signed the Louisiana Purchase Treaty on April 30, 1803. On July 4, 1803, the treaty reached Washington, D.C.. was the acquisition of the Louisiana territory. It opended up most of the western U.S.. It happended in Louisiana and the western part of the country. -
Lewis and Clark Expedition
President Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark on an Expedition to explore new land west and the Pacific Ocean. It relates to the westward expansion becuase the land that lewis and Clark explored later became a popular settlement areas and more and more people moved westward. -
War of 1812 (in connection to westward expansion)
The War of 1812 was a military conflict, lasting for two and a half years, fought by the United States of America against the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, its North American colonies and its Native American allies. There is several reasons why this war happended one is trade restrictions brought by Britian. This event happended at sea and in the southern united states. -
Purchase of Florida from Spain
we bought a piece of florida from spain and the Britians during the American Reveloutionary War. This event occured in Florida. In contact of the westward expansion becuase more settlers moved down into florida. -
Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was an effort by Congress to defuse the sectional and political rivalries triggered by the request of Missouri late in 1819 for admission as a state in which slavery would be permitted. It happended In an effort to preserve the balance of power in Congress between slave and free states, the Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820 admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. This event occured in Missouri. -
Eerie Canal
The Erie Canal is a canal in New York that originally ran about 363 miles from Albany, on the Hudson River to Buffalo, at Lake Erie. It was built to create a navigable water route from New York City and the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. It happended in New York. -
Indian Removal Act
The law authorized the president to negotiate with southern Indian tribes for their removal to federal territory west of the Mississippi River in exchange for their ancestral homelands. This event happended and allowed the federal government the power to relocate any Native Americans in the east to territory that was west of the Mississippi River.It relates to the westward expansion becuase the americans are taking the native americans homelands from them and moving them west of the Mississippi -
Trail of tears
Andrew Jackson's Indian removal policy, the Cherokee nation was forced to give up its lands east of the Mississippi River and to migrate to an area in present-day Oklahoma. This event occured in the souther part of the United States of America. -
Annexation Texas
The Texas annexation was the 1845 incorporation of the Republic of Texas into the United States of America, which was admitted to the Union as the 28th state. This expansion established a Spanish (and later Mexican) claim to much of the southwestern part of the United States and California. It happened mostly in the southern U.S. including, Texas, some parts of california, and Mexico. -
Mormon Movement
Smith’s claim to be a modern-day prophet of God and his acceptance of polygamy proved controversial wherever the Mormons attempted to settle. This event occured in Utah, illinois. -
California Gold Rush
This event started when James Marshall discovered a gold nugget in an american river. This event took place in the state of California in the United States. It relates to the westward expansion because everyone was moving west becuase they would want to become rich and find gold and mine it, to sell it. This event was a large movement west for gold mining in California. -
Treaty of Guadalupe
Limits and Settlement between the United States of America and the Mexican Republic. The treaty added an additional 525,000 square miles to United States territory, including the land that makes up all or parts of present-day Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. It occured in present day south western United States of America. -
Orgen Territory
Congress created the Oregon Territory, an area that includes what is today Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and western Montana. The Oregon Territory quickly became a popular place for various groups of immigrants and settlers. It relates to the westward expansion becuase most settlers started moving to the places that is in the orgen territory because they were so popular. -
Gadsden Purchase
IT was an agreemant between U.S. and Mexico to pay Mexico 10 Million Dollars for a portion of Mexico, present day Arizona, and New Mexico. It provided Land for Railways and trading routes. Happended because they were railroads built there and we had to buy the land to open them up and use them in our own country. This event happended in the U.S. and Mexico. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
It allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. The Act served to repeal the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which prohibited slavery north of latitude 36°30´. It happended to let people to decide themselves to own slaves or be agianst slaverly. It occured in Kansas, Nebraska, and other areas around them. -
Homestead Act
the Homestead Act encouraged Western migration by providing settlers 160 acres of public land. In exchange, homesteaders paid a small filing fee and were required to complete five years of continuous residence before receiving ownership of the land. This event occured in the southern states. -
Transcontinental Railroad
contiguous railroad line constructed in the United States between 1863 and 1869 west of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers to connect the Pacific coast at San Francisco Bay with the existing eastern U.S. rail network at Council Bluffs, Iowa. It occured in the Western part of the mississippi river. They built it to connect the Pacific Ocean to the San Francisco bay. -
The Dawes Act
It authorized the President of the United States to survey American Indian tribal land and divide it into allotments for individual Indians. It happended in the United States and it happended to take land from Native americans. -
Spanish-American War
The Spanish–American War was a conflict in 1898 between Spain and the United States, the result of U.S. intervention in the Cuban War of Independence. It happended in mexico and south western America.
