Scientists debated the theory of spontaneous generation

During this period of time, most of the scientists defended the theory of spontaneous generation. This theory states that life is created from nonliving matter. One example they used to demonstrate this theory was rotting meat; they said that when meat rots, flies were created form it.
  • Robert Hooke discovered cells

    Robert Hooke discovered cells
With the help of a microscope, Robert discovered dead cells of cork. During other experiments he saw strands of fungi.
  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek gave the first descriptions of protozoa, fungi, and bacteria

Anton van Leeuwenhoek gave the first descriptions of protozoa, fungi, and bacteria
This Dutch merchant published society’s Philosophical Transactions, a work in whic he gave the name "animalcules " to these microscopic organisms. He also included a drawing representation of bacteria in his publication.
  • Louis Pasteur proposed the germ theory of disease

Louis Pasteur proposed the germ theory of disease
To find the reason why wine became sour, Louis Pasteur developed a series of experiments. He discovered that bacteria were the answer. However, he needed to dismiss the theory of spontaneous generation, but he could not achive it.
  • Mycobacterium tuberculosis was discovered by Robert Koch

Mycobacterium tuberculosis was discovered by Robert Koch
Mycobacterium tuberculosis, also called "koch bacillus", is a pathogenic bacteria that caused tuberculosis. This disease affects lungs and the main symptoms are chronic cough, fever, and weight loss.
  • Robert Koch discovered a method to cultivate bacteria

Robert Koch discovered a method to cultivate bacteria
Robert Koch method, also called Koch's postulates, shows four steps to identify the relationship between a disease and a microorganism. The steps are:
    1. To observe the microorganism in an ill animal
    2. Isolate the microorganism in a pure culture
    3. Introduce the microorganims in a healthy animal
    4. Identify if both of the microorganisms had the same effect in the animals

    Golder Age of Microbiology

  • Alexander Fleming accidentially discovers Penicillin

    Alexander Fleming accidentially discovers Penicillin
Penicillin is the first antibiotic drug discovered and used in medicine. It was developed on a staphylococcus culture plate.
  • The electron microscope was created

    The electron microscope was created
Electron microscope is a technology that uses electrons with short wavelengths to obtain high resolution images of microorganisms. The electrons provides illumination by radiation. This type of light microscopy differs with the traditional one, know as brightfield microscopes, which used visible light to form the image
  • Antibiotics were created and introduced in medicine

Antibiotics were created and introduced in medicine
This antibiotics were used to decrease the effect of infectious diseases.
  • Period: to

Many vaccines against viral disease were developed

  • Period: to

    Anti vaccines movements

Since vaccine laws were established, many peolple started fighting against these medical treatments. They stated that these laws violated the right to care for our own body and that vaccines caused neurological disorders as secondary effects.
