    Sweard's Folly is the purchase of Alaska.Secretary of State, William H. Seward purchaased Alaska for $7.2 million from Russia. Alaska was useful for petroleum for America.

    Grant was a Civil War veteran and leader. He was put in charge of the military portion of reconstruction and that led to his presidency.

    Jim Crow Laws were put into place in order to keep white supremacy in the South. Poll taxes that could randomly go up at anytime and literacy tests were made to keep blacks from voting. Grandfather clauses allowed poor, illerteraite whites to vote anyways. The Jim Crow Laws made a segregated society in the South.

    19th President of the USA. He was elected towards the end of the reconstruction period and focused alot on making the North and South stronger uninted.

Americ a watend to expand their territory to have bigger markets to trade in, promoting Anglo-Saxon "superiority" or the "white mans burden", and to gain sea power.

    The Queen of Hawaii opposed the American sugar planters and Americans in general. This led to a small revolution in which America gained Hawaii as a territory and later a state.

    Black men were attacked after voting, outside the goverment bulidings by white men with rifels. 14 black men were killed, this led to the rise of NC's Jim Crow laws.

    Took place in Galveston, Texas. The deadlist hurricane in US history. Killed between 6,000 and 12,000 many survivors moved to the midwest.

    Theodore Roosevelt extended the Monroe Doctorine. He said the U.S should be the "police man" of the western hemisphere, meaning we intervene in all problems with South and North America

    Roosevelt - Bull Moose Party, Taft- Republican, Wilson- Democrat. Taft just ran to spite Teddy who now hated him, they split the Republican vote in half. Wilson won with all the democratic votes.

    He got the office due to Taft and Roosevelt fude had the republic party split getting him all the democrat votes. He created the federal reserve act, he passsed prohibition, he established mothers day as a holiday, he also gave women the right to vote.

    Archduck Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian. Almost all of Europe got involved after Germany ivaded nuetral Belgium. A very deadly war because we used modern weapons and old stratagey.

    The 18th amendment prohibited sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcholic beverages. Resulting in a decline of drunkeness, operation of speak easies, bootlegging and smuggling flourished. The 21st amendment appeleaed the 18th.

    Fidel Castro takes over Cuba making it communist. The US CIA trains Cuban refugees to rebels and sends them to assassinate Fidel Castro. America gets caught.

    Soviet Union placed missiles in Cuba that were capable of reaching the US. Kennedy blocaked Cuba until the Soviet Union dismanteled the sights and this led to the signing of the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

    Jimmy Carter basically made Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Menachim Begin of Isreal sit down at the presidential retreat and talk peace. This again was America showing unconditional support for Isreal. This also helped ease tentions in the middle east.
