    Estates General of 1789
    King Louis XVI ran out of money by taking care of the greedy Marie Antoinette by buying her gowns, jewels, gifts and letting her gamble. The leader was running out of money, so his solution was to tax the noble. The 2nd Estate made him call a Estates General meeting -first one in 175 years- to approve/discuss the new tax. This meeting had representatives from the three different states to have a fair discussion.
  • The Establishing of the National Assembly

    The Establishing of the National Assembly
    The Third Estate broke away from the Estates General and formed the National Assembly, where the representatives from the lower classes were able to pass rules to the French.
  • The Tennis Court Oath

    The Tennis Court Oath
    The third estate members were locked out of the meeting, and since they knew they'd be outvoted by the other two high-class estates, they went to a nearby tennis court and oathed to stay together until there was a written constitution.

    An act of revolution, where some French troops stormed and broke into Bastille, a prison in Paris, and killed guards, and took over the prison. This is considered a symbol for the French Revolution.

    It stated that men are all born the same, thus they "remain free and equal in rights." The declaration stated that they have the rights to "liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression." It also said it would give all citizens freedoms of speech, religion, and justice for all.

    The revolutionaries believed that war would bring the Frenc together, and spread the revolutionary ideas through Europe, so they declared war on Austria and Prussia.

    Expansion of French Army in the war against Austria and Prussia

    The French were losing the war against Austria and Prussia, thanks to the reinforcements they had, which consisted of a joint effort to defeat France by Spain, Holland, and Great Britain. France was forced to get a bigger army, so they expanded their army using citizens. They started in 1793, with 300,000 men, and by early 1794, they had over 800,000 men and women over 18 years of age fighting in the war.

    Robespierre takes Control of France
    Maximilien Robespierre took control of France as a Jacobin, and lead it through rough times. He made the citizens fear to gain control. It was called the "Reign of Terror."
  • End of Terror

    End of Terror
    The terror all ended when they killed Robespierre. He was sent to the guillotine because everyone wanted him to be arrested or executed. His Reign of Terror finally ended.
