    Due to the extreme situation France was in,the king had to call the Estates-General (that weren't called since 1614) to decide if they should make the Nobility and Clergy pay taxes as well. They obvioulsly opossed this,which made the third state angry as it was unfair. After this,the third state left the Estates-General.

    The National Constituent Assembly was formed by the Thrid State to rearch their will of making a constitutional and parliamentary monarchy in France.
  • Storming of the Bastille

    Storming of the Bastille
    In the afternoon of the 14th of July,the Bastille, a political prission that represented the power of the royal family, was atacked by the thrid state. This was like directly atacking the Ancien Regime and letting the royalist know that the citizens of France were angry and tired.

    Storming of the Tuileries
    This event was one of the most important ones of the French Revolution.
    The National Guard and the sans-culottes (common people) stormed the Tuileries Palace and impresioned the royal family.
    This was the beginning of the Republic.

    In this period,the moderate bourgeoisie (Girondins) controlled the Republic. They created the National Convention and convicted Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette of treason.

    This was made by the Jacobins,the new Constitution was inspired by the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789, to which it added several rights: it proclaimed the superiority of popular sovereignty over national sovereignty; various economic and social rights (right of association, right to work and public assistance, right to public education); the right of rebellion (and duty to rebel when the government violates the right of the people); and the abolition of slavery.

    The Reign of Terror

    This is the period when Jacobins seized the power. Although our constitution claimed social equality and popular sovereignty,for some reason all the power is held in its major part by Robespierre. People who opposed the government were executed. About 16.000/40.000 people were killed. Most of them were royalist or people who suppsedly were against the revolution. Most of them just weren't against Robespierre.

    Execution of Louis XVI
    This event took place in the currently named Place de la Concorde.
    The king,convicted of treason,was beheaded in the guillotine,and so was his wife (Marie Antoniette) months after.
    This made monarchist countries in Europe create an absolutist coalition against France to try to stop the revolutionary ideas.

    Although the things first propossed by the Jacobins and Robespierre maybe seemed nice for the citizen,soon things changed. People started to be angry with Robespierre and decided to convict him and the Jacobins to the guillotine.
    This was the beginning of the Thermidorian Convention.

    After the Reign of Terror,moderate republicans (girondins) seize the power again. They asked the exiles during the Robespierre's government to come back. Despite this,ther's still hunger and royalist plots took place.

    The Constitution of the Year III established a liberal republic with a franchise based on the payment of taxes, similar to that of the French Constitution of 1791; a bicameral legislature, (Council of Ancients, and a Council of 500) to slow down the legislative process and a five-man Directory. It founded the Directory.

    It started with the creation of the Constitution of the Year III. It had a census suffrage and the executive power was held by 5 directors to avoid only one person having all the power. The legislative power was divided into two branches; Council of 500,which propposed the laws and Council of Ancients,which passed the laws.
    It was an unestable and weak system as making decisions was extremely difficult.
