    First form of graffiti was know as taggin.
    Taggin is painting one colour signatures on public places. Taki 183 became a very famousgraffiti writer in New York in 1971.
  • New styles.

    New styles.
    1971-1974 writers started using spray cans and making throw ups.
    Throw ups is making a quick and simple piece of graffiti using only two colours. Writers also began to compete on skill, and many new styles were born. In the last 70's murals began to appear around the city.
    Mural is a piece on a whole wall. Also at that time different writers had competitions between crews. The best thing you could be was becoming king.

    The different crews started to compete with other crews about who could put put their mark on most places in the city.
    Writers needed new ways of standing out, so graffiti took a turn and made graffiti more artistic also known as burners.
  • The Buff

    The Buff
    In 1972 the mayor of New York City declared war on graffiti.
    The mayor wanted to clean the city of graffiti also known as The Buff.
    The buff had made it harder to find locations to write and the laws against graffiti become tougher.
    New writers (Toys) started destroying other writers work to make room for their own.
    Crews got tighter and tougher trying to protect their own work.
  • Spraying Galleries

    Spraying Galleries
    In effort to control the writers the New York authories offer legal walls called Spraying Galleries.
    However writers also find new ways of getting around the public places.
    Lamp posts are being plastered with preprinted stickers, also in other parts of the city windows are being tagged with acid-based cream that etches itself into the glass.
    Graffiti has been around since the beginning of time.
