History of wake county

  • Wake County's first people were the Tuscarora

    Wake County was once part of the Tuscarora Nation. Early colonists the land and took unfair advantage of the Indians. Hostilities broke out that led to the violent Tuscarora War.
  • Tuscarora War(End Date)

    The Tuscarora War was also known as Chief Hancock's War. The British, American, Dutch, and German colonists were all fighting against the Indians. A peace treaty was eventually signed in June 1718.
  • English and Scotch-Irish Settlers moved to Wake County from the North to start farms(Through the Decade)

    The English and Scottish settlers also came here to raise animal. North Carolina had very good agriculture. You could grow tobacco,cotton,wheat,soybeans, and corn.
  • Wake County Formed

    Wake County was named in honor of Margaret. She was the wife of William Tyron, the Royal Governor of the British colony of North Carolina. The county was formed from parts of Cumberland, Johnston, and Orange counties.
  • Raleigh becomes state capital

    Raleigh was named after Sir Walter Raleigh. HE helped establishment of the first English colony in North America on North Carolina's Roanoke Island. Raleigh soon became the state capital and he new location of Wake County
  • Railroads were built

    The first railroad company to operate in North Carolina was the Petersburg(Va.) Railroad. This included nine miles of North Carolina track near Halifax. The first North Carolina railroad was Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad.
  • Research Triangle Park was built

    RTP is the leading and largest high technology research and science park in North America. The park is two miles wide and eight miles long, located in Durham. RTP has over 170 companies, 42,000 full time employees, and 10,000 contract workers.
  • Tyson Moves to Wake County from New Jersey

    I was born in New Jersey and moved to Wake County (Raleigh) when I was 1 year old. I now live in Wake Forest.
