Bessemer Process
The Bessemer process was created when Henry Besserman wanted to find a way to create steel without the coal and time it usually took. He did this by taking out the impurities from pig iron and blowing air onto the iron. -
Edwin Drake
Edwin Drake was the first person to hit oil near Titusville, Pennsylvania with his invention the Derrick, and he also went on to create the oil pump. -
John D. Rockerfeller
John D. Rockerfeller created standard oil. He entered the oil company in 1863, and by the 1880's he controlled 90% of the United States pipelines. -

Christopher Sholes created the first modern typewriter. -
Transcontinental Railroad completed
When the Transcontinental Roailroad was completed, it made transport possible for the first time in the United States.The railroad helped the people from the west travel without needing to take wagons across the country. -
Munn v. Illinois
Munn v. Illinois started in 1871 when the Illinois legislature responded to farmers who wanted to charge for storage and transpotation of goods. It was approved and made into a law. The Chicago grain wearhouse, Munn and Scott, was accused of breaking these laws and were to be put on trial. It was apart of the Granger Cases. -
Mother Jones
Mother Jones helped organize some of the major strikes during the Industrial Revolution. She helped the people get what they wanted, such as less working hours and more pay. She was born in 1871. -
The Credit Moibiler Scandal
The Credit Moibiler Scandal began because the Congressmen gave too much government money to the railroad workers, because they weren't paying attention to expenses. This lead to the workers making more money than before, which angered Americans. -
Alexander Graham Bell
While Bell worked in a school for the deaf, he invented a telephone that would transfer sound by electricity. -
Thomas Edison
Thomas Edison, through the use of a carbon transmitter, made it easier for people to hear more clearly and at a louder volume on the telephone. -
Munn v. Illinois Case
The appeal of Munn v. Illinois was heard in 1877 by the Supreme Court. It was said that the grain storages were affecting public intrest and that the state should be the one taking control, not the federal systems. -
The Haymarket Riot
The Haymarket Riot started when someone threw a bomb at the police. Eight people died because of the chaos that occured as a result. It had begun because the industrial workers wanted higher pay and less dangeros jobs. -
Interstate Commerce Act
The Interstate Commerce Act came up with ways to help the railroad owners by setting boundries on how the railroads should be run, even though some laws contradicted others. -
Homestead Strike
The Homestead strike happened in Homestead, Pennsylvania against Carnegie Steel Company. The strike had the workers at the steel company win a 3 year contract through the help of the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers . Also, another strike occured when the ownwers of the company tried to cut the contract off. -
Sherman Antitrust Act
The Sherman Antitrust Act was passed by the U.S Congress to stop trusts. It was passed on July 2nd 1890. One of its main purposes was to allow the states that were unable to trade between states and other countries, to do so. It helped the states get what they needed from other locations. -
Eugene Debs
Eugene Debs organized the union of railroad workers, and he lead the American Railway. -
Pullam Strike
A boycott of the railroad labor through Chicago stopped all traffic starting in May until early July. The strike was due to the long hours that the people worked, and also the little amount of money they got payed. -
Henry Ford
Henry Ford created his Motor Company in 1903, and also made cars and other vehichels like his Model T. -
The Wright Brothers
In the year 1903 the Wright Brothers,Orville and Wilbur created the first airplane, and flew it near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. -
Lochner v. New York Decision
The Supreme Court decided the hours the bakers worked in bakeries was too much and created a law against it. Except Lochner was a baker and was fined $50 or 50 days in the county jail for having a baker work 60 hours in one week. Also it was said to go against the Fourteenth Amendment so it was a large debate consiting of labor hours and the laws.
