  • Creation of Identity cards

    Belgians organize a census and mandate that everyone is issued an identity card classifying them as either Tutsi, Hutu, or Twa, based of their ethnicity of their fathers.
    1 classification, because they are being categorized according their ethnicity. This is important, because it helped identifying the Tutsis and Hutus.
  • Hutu Rebelion

    Hutu rebellion begins against the Tutsis, killed many Tutsis, and caused 330,000 to seek refuge outside Rwanda.
    7 Preparation , and 9 Extermination, because they were exiled of Rwanda to refuge, and some of them were killed.
    This is important because it is the beginning of the Social Revolution in Rwanda.
  • Rwanda gains Independence

    When Rwanda gained independence 120,000 Tutsis refuge in neighbor states. A new cycle of ethnic conflict and violence continued after independence. Rwanda began organizing and staging attacks on Hutu targets.
    5 Organization, because Tutsis started to organize their revenge against Hutu government.
    This stage is important because people thought that with independence it will bring peace, but it was the opposite.
  • Civil War Begins

    The RPF (Rwandan Patriotic Front) is created in Uganda, made up of children of the Tutsi exiles.
    5 Organization, because the exile Tutsi continued to plan their revenge creating a new Party.
    This is important, because the RPF is going to invade Rwanda, starting a civil war.
  • RPF major attack on Rwanda

    The RPF launched a major attack on Rwanda from Uganda with a force of 7,000 fighters. Media, particularly radio, continued to spread a propaganda against all Tutsi, and Hutu members that did not agree with them were labeled as traitors.
    4 Dehumanization and 6 Polarization, because of the use of discriminating propaganda, and the prohibition of interactions between groups.
  • Increase of violence

    It started to increase the violence between Hutus and Tutsi with the use of weapons, UNAMIR tried to assist in helping end the violence, but it was not successful. The violation of human rights of Tutsis started. Hutus massacred Tutsis in churches or in the streets.
    3 Discrimination and 9 Extermination, because Tutsis rights were denied, and Tutsis were being killed by Hutus.
  • UNAMIR

    UNAMIR was "successful" with the peacemaking of Hutus and Tutsis, however Hutus majority while talking peace were in fact planning a campaign to exterminate Tutsi.
    5 Organization, because Hutus started to create killing plans against Tutsis. This event is important, because they were supposed to be in peace.
  • Plane Crash of Presidents Burundi and Rwanda

    The airplane of Rwandan President and Burundi President was shot down, and were killed. The assassination was blamed on the Tutsi and it is the official beginning of the Rwandan Genocide.
    9 Extermination, because Genocide started. This is important because they were in peace, and because of that the Genocide continued.
  • RTLM

    Radio Television Libres Des Mille Collines aired a broadcast attributing the plane crash of the presidents to the RPF as well as incitements to eliminate the "Tutsi cockroach".
    4 Dehumanization, because Tutsis were drawn as animals, and were discriminated. This event is important, because it made more Hutus to support the discrimination, and violence against Tutsis.
  • Kibuye Massacre

    An estimated of of 12,000 Tutsis were killed after sheltering at the Gatwaro stadium in Gitesi. Another 50,000 are killed in the hills of Bisesero, and more in town's hospital and church.
    9 Extermination, because it was when the massacre happened. It is important because it is one of the last main events, and almost the end.
  • Genocide Ends

    An estimated of 800,000 people were killed by mid-May, after mid-May the killings began to slow. The RPF took back significant part of the country, and by July, the RPF pushed the sitting government out of the country, and the genocide finally comes to an end.
    This is important, because the Genocide comes to an end.
