Significant Events From The End of WWI to The End of WWII.

  • Armistice

    The Armistice was an agreement signed by representatives of France, Great Britain and Germany and was the agreement to end the fighting of World War 1.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    After World War 1 the Treaty of Versailles was the peace settlement signed by the League of Nations. This Treaty severely affected Germany's economy as they were forced to pair reparations for the damage caused, their military size/machinery was downsized and the amount of land they owned was decreased.
  • League of Nations

    League of Nations was instituted and was used to provide a forum for resolving international disputes.
  • The Nazi Party was created

    Hitler forms the Nazi Party as a revolutionary party performs large persuasive speeches in front of crowds.
  • The Soviet Union and Germany sign the Treaty of Berlin

    The Soviet Union and Germany sign the Treaty of Berlin. This Treaty allows either country to remain neutral if one or the other is attacked by another country.
  • Germany accepted into The League of Nations

    This allowed Germany to improve their economy and political relations with the Allies.
  • Weimar Government of Germany Falls

    As hard times hit Germany the Weimar Government falls and the Nazi political power continues to grow.
  • Hitler Becomes The Leader Of Germany

    Adolf Hitler becomes chancellor of Germany and his Nazi Government soon assume dictatorial powers.
  • Hitler and Mussolini form the Axis Powers

    The Axis of Powers included Germany, Italy and Japan. The Axis partners had the two same common interests: territorial expansion and the foundation of empires based on military conquest, and the destruction of the Soviet Communism.
  • Germany invades Poland

    German forces bomb Poland on land and from the air, as Adolf Hitler seeks to regain lost territory and ultimately rule Poland. This was the trigger for the start of World War 2.
  • Germany begins invasion of France

    After Germany's victory in Poland, Hitler invaded France. Due to Germany being part of the Axis Powers. Italy also joined in the conflict between Germany and France.
  • Italy declares war on France and Great Britain

    Due to Italy’s alliance with Germany, Italy also joined the war in France and invaded Britain as well. Other countries then joined the war due to their existing alliances with France and Great Britain, which further contributed to the progression of WWII as a global conflict.
  • Japanese attack Pearl Harbour

    Japanese attacks Pearl Harbour and the USA declares war on Japan and joins Allied war effort.
  • US declares war on Japan

    Japan's ally Germany, then declared War on the United states, therefore turning the war already raging in Europe into a global confict.
  • Australia declares war on Japan

    Australia’s troops were spread across the globe, however, due to the advancing Japanese military imperialising all land areas to the South, the Australian troops were bought back to Australia to fight. Australian then declared war on Japan with America as their allies.
  • Germany and Italy declare war on USA

    After the declaration of war on Japan from the American's, Germany and Italy declared war on the USA as Japan was their ally and was part of the Axis Powers.
  • Singapore surrenders to Japan (The Fall of Singapore)

    Singapore was considered to be the fortress of British power in Asia. The British believed an attack would come from the sea. Instead, the Japanese brought their tanks down through the Malayan Peninsula.
    The Japanese took 134 000 troops prisoner (15 000 Australians). Most were sent to POW camps, e.g. Changi. Others were forced to build the “death railway” between Burma and Thailand.
  • Battle of the Coral Sea

    The Battle of the Coral Sea was a naval battle in the Pacific theater of War between the Japanese Navy, and naval and air forces from the United States and Australia.
  • Japanese decide to take Port Moresby by land invasion (via the Kokoda Trail)

    This event was another event that further contributed to the progression of WWII as a global war. After Japan invaded Port Moresby, America and Australia continued to attack Japan and thus war in the Pacific was created.
  • Germany suffers significant defeat in Russia (Battle of Stalingrad)

    The Battle of Stalingrad was a battle on the Eastern Front between Germany and its allies, and the Soviet Union. The Battle was fought for control of the city of Stalingrad in Southern Russia. After Germany's defeat in Russia, Russia was able to rebuild their military strength and build a strong defense line, as they were no longer under attack from Germany. Other countries were able to join the war effort against Germany as they knew they were strongly supported by Russia’s military strength.
  • Italy surrenders to the Allies

    Due to Italy’s surrender and their withdrawal from the Axis of Power, more countries could wage war on Germany as they were no longer under threat by Italy; Italy’s removal of troops from the Allied countries allowed these nations to strengthen their military and join the war effort.
  • Italy declares war on Germany

    After Italy surrendered to the Allies they declared war on Germany shortly after. Italy and the Allies then attacked Germany together.
  • Allies invade German-occupied France (D-Day)

    D-Day Allies invade Normandy. Involved Britain, Canada and America fighting against Germany to win back France.
  • Russian Army enters Berlin, Germany.

    After Germany surrendered to Russia in 1943. Russia built up their military strength and attacked Berlin in 1945.
  • Germany forces surrender to the Allies

    On this day Germany forces surrender to the allies in Northwestern France. The War in the West was over and the War in the East would be over the day after.
  • Victory in Europe (VE) Day

    The German High Command authorised the signing of an unconditional surrender on all fronts. The surrender was to take effect at midnight between the 8th and 9th may 1945. The following day, 8 May, was declared VE (Victory in Europe) Day.
  • Attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    Bombs drops on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan surrenders.
    First bomb dropped on Hiroshima on the 6th of August. Three days later America drop another bomb on Nagasaki.
  • Japan Surrenders

    Victory over Japan day (V-J) Day. This effectively ended World War 2.
