    Pioneer Space Program

    • The very first probe, Pioneer 0 was launched August 12th, 1958
    • Pioneer 3 made it to the moon, as well as Pioneer 4
    • 1972 – 1974 got more data in than ever
    • 12 probes created for NASA to send up
    After more than 30 years, it appears the venerable Pioneer 10 spacecraft has sent its last signal to Earth. Pioneer's last, very weak signal was received on 23 January 2003
  • Sputnik, Mercury and Gemini Programs

    • The soviet union launched Sputnik
    • It was the size of a beach ball
    • Russians wanted to get a ahead and start the space race
    • Mercury orbited earth, and was born on October 7th, 1958
    • Gemini had 19 launches, and was launched in 1964
  • Venera Probes

    • Soviet Unions
    • Mission was to reach venus
    • Venera
    • They wanted to explore the atmosphere
    • Venera 4,5 and 6 had partial success
    • Venera 9 was the first spacecraft to orbit Venus and take pictures
    • Venera 11 & 12 were highly successful and took the first pictures of Venus
    • Venera 4 failed, and all others were partially successful or success

    Mariner Program

    • Mariner 1 failed,
    • Mariner 2 was launched August 27th, 1962
    • Cost about 554 million dollars
    • Mariner 1, 2, 5, 10 went to Venus
    • Created in 1962
    • Mariner 10 was the last one, which launched in November 3rd, 1973
    • The mariner program were the first to take pictures from another planet
    • Helped gain priceless knowledge about space technology, information about other planets, and a better understanding of the universe outside of earth
  • The Salyut Launch/Space Stations

    • The Skylab, first American space station in low earth orbit
    • The Skylab than fell apart in space
    • MIR launched on 20th of February, 1986
  • Viking Project

    • Viking 1 was used to land on mars, Viking 2 was to orbit mars
    • In July 20th, 1976, taking its first pictures of mars
    • Viking 1 launched August 20th, 1975
    • It just went to Mars, and is presently still there
    • They sent it to study the surface of mars, and to observe if there’s any life on Mars
  • The Space Shuttle

    • The Atlantis traveled 126,000,000 miles
    • The Columbia launched April 12th, 1981
    • The July 21st, 2011 was the Atlantis
    • 135 missions in total

    Magellan Mission

    • Made to discover Venus
    • Launched on May 4th 1989
    • Arrived on Venus in August 10th, 1990
    • It burned in orbit and never made it back
    • It was made from spare parts from the other missions
  • Galileo Spacecraft

    • Hundreds of scientists were involved
    • 1.49 Billion dollars, but was the first to send probes into deep space
    • Created in 1977
    • Launched in Kennedy Space Center, Florida
    • It did return more than 200 times
    • Launched first on October 18th, 1989
    • February 10th. 1990
    • October 29th, 1991 – First spacecraft that ever encountered an asteroid on
    • Took 2 years to create the spacecraft
  • Shoemaker Mission

    • Mission lasted about 5 years
    • Asteroid Eros 433
    • Launched on February 17th, 1996
    • Landed February 12th, 2001
    • Eros – biggest near earth asteroid
    • First to land on an asteroid
  • Mars Rovers

    • It was intended to see if humans could live on mars
    • Sojourner, which was the first US rover landed on July 4th, 1997
    • The Mer-A and the Mer-B landed on June and July of 2003
  • Voyager Probes

    • The first voyager took off on September 5th, 1977
    • The second took of August 7th, 1977
    • We sent the probes out because we wanted to find out more about spae
    • Each voyager was made out of about 65000 parts
    • During the program they gathered information about the outer rim planets
    • Recently, the Voyager went out of our solar system

    The Cassini Spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, on October 15, 1998
  • Hubble Space Telescope

    • NASA was responsible for design and construction
    • Hubble was launched in April 25th, 1990
    • In 1996 the first Deep Field observation was shown that there are many different galaxies in our universe
  • Genesis Spacecraft

    • Flew near the sun
    • August 9th, 2001, launched from Cape Canaveral
    • NASA wanted more info about solar dust for comet research
    • December 3rd, 2001: started collected solar wind
    • August 8th, 2001: launched from Florida
  • Cassini Arrives in Saturn
