    Mayo brothers, Dr. William and Dr. Charles received many recognitions and awknowlegements for their own accomplishments in medicine, but always spoke of these accomplishments as "My brother and I.." This was the beginning of a brotherhood business.

    The First Partner

    "Following the opening of Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester in 1889, the Mayo brothers developed a career in surgery that brought them international acclaim. In 1892, Dr. Augustus Stinchfield, a prominent area physician, became the first of a series of partners to join the Doctors Mayo group.     The Second Partner

    "The partnership era of the Mayo practice began in 1892, when Dr. Augustus Stinchfield, a well-known practitioner from Eyota, Minn., joined the Mayos as their first partner.     Dr. Plummer

    "In 1901, the Mayo brothers received a call for a consultation with Dr. Albert Plummer. When Dr. William Mayo arrived, Dr. Plummer was sick in bed with a cold and unable to accompany Dr. Will to see the patient. Instead, he sent his son, Henry, who was in practice with him." (Mayo Clinic)

    Dr. Stinchfield's Retirement

    Harry J. Harwick

    1914 Building

    "On Oct. 9, 1912, members of the firm, Doctors Mayo, Graham, Plummer and Judd, their associates and other interested onlookers gathered on the southeast corner of Second Avenue Southwest and First Street Southwest to observe the cementing of a Missouri marble cornerstone into the wall of the first Mayo Clinic building. The structure would not be completed until two years later, but the event was important in the evolution of Mayo's medical practice. The building opened on March 6, 1914." (Mayo)

    The Last Member of The Mayo Partnership

    "In 1915, Dr. Donald Balfour became the last member of the Mayo partnership. With the retirement of Dr. Graham in 1919, and establishment of Mayo Properties Association (forerunner of Mayo Foundation) by the remaining partners that year, the modern era of the Mayo medical practice began."     The Death of The Mayo Brothers

    Cortisone Discovery

    "Dr. Hench knew of Dr. Kendall's work on the adrenal cortex. On Sept. 21, 1948, a patient at Saint Marys Hospital received the first injection of Compound E. Three days later there was an astonishing change -- less muscular stiffness and soreness. Over the next seven months, trials were completed on 14 patients with severe or moderately severe rheumatoid arthritis. All showed marked improvement." (Mayo Clinic)

    Nobel Prize

    " In 1950, Drs. Kendall and Hench learned they were co-winners of the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine -- sharing the prize with Dr. Tadeus Reichstein of Switzerland, who had simultaneously isolated the hormones of the adrenal cortex. They accepted the award at the Nobel presentations in Stockholm, Sweden."

    Mayo Building Opens and Expands

    "Construction of the 10-story Mayo Building was completed in 1955. Up to that time, it was the largest building project undertaken by Mayo. The need for the new facility was driven by a dramatic post-World War II increase in the number of patients. Between 1938 and 1949, an estimated 25,000 to 50,000 patients were unable to obtain appointments at Mayo because of high demand for its services.
