  • Hubble Space Telescope

    Hubble Space Telescope
    On April 24, 1990 NASSA launched the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit in Earth's atmosphere. This was designed with the purpose of general space observations and it was meant to explore the universe invisible, ultraviolet, infrared wavelengths. Hubble orbits the Earth at a speed of 17,000 miles per hour and it takes fifteen minutes to rotate ninety degrees. The Hubble Space Telescope remains in operation today and continues to provide NASSA new data about space.
  • Rodney King

    Rodney King
    While driving on a Los Angelos highway, Rodney King was pulled over by police officers for speeding after 8-mile pursuit. Once pulled over, the police officers began to beat him and use the taser on him. During the altercation with police, a bystander across the street videotaped the confrontation. The video captured the brutal beating of Rodney and went on to gain wide spread attention in the media. This video would later insight the 1992 destructive Los Angelos riots that caused damage.

    Hurricane Andrew
    Hurricane Andrew was a very powerful and destructive category five Atlantic hurricane. The hurricane started in the Bahamas and struck Florida and Louisiana in August of 1992. Financially, it remains the most expensive in terms of property damage that hit Florida until Hurricane Irma that occurred 25 years later. Hurricane Andrew destroyed more than 63,500 houses and damaged more than 124,000 other properties causing a total of 27.3 billion dollars in damage. (https://www.weather.gov/lch/andrew)
  • WACO

    WACO
    The Waco standoff between the Branch Davidians Church and the ATF began on February 28th resulting in a 51 day standoff in. Once the ATF entered the property and failed to execute their search warrant, shots were fired between the two groups. Inside of their church the Branch Davidians housed men woman and children, who remained trapped inside during the standoff. The confrontation resulted in nearly 70 deaths. The standoff ended on April 19th when the groups compound was destroyed in a fire.

    Northridge Earthquake
    On January 17, 1994 at 4:31 a.m., an earthquake struck centered in Northridge California and hit a magnitude of 6.7 with 57 deaths. The earthquake damages costs up to $20 billion and economic loss of $40 billion which makes it the most expensive earthquake disaster in US History. The Northridge earthquake forced changes in legislative because of the large amounts of loss by insurance companies which led them to restrictive insurance.     Internet and Y2K
    The rise of internet companies launched in the 1990s when households increased their use of internet and personal computers. With using the internet more consistently, they were approached with feelings of being "addicted", "hooked", and "can't switch off" that escalated isolation. Online stores and companies started where Amazon played a big role of selling used books online for people to buy. Once the year 2000 started, many people were scared for the unknown potential computer problems.

    OKC Bombing
    The Oklahoma City bombing was a terrorist attack on April 19, 1995. This was the largest terrorist attack on the US soil during this time period. Timothy McVeigh was the perpetrator of this event and the bombing killed 168 people including 19 children with several hundred injured. McVeigh parked a car in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City with a bomb inside. McVeigh was caught by dumb luck because he was pulled over for having a broken tail light on his car.

    Bill Clinton Election
    Bill Clinton was reelected as president from the 1996 election where he beat Bob Dole, former US Senator and Republican. During this time, Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act into law. This law declared that marriage was the union of one man and one woman ("Kruse and Zelizer", 218). Additionally, "Don't Ask Don't Tell" was the official US policy that ensured people serving in the military were not allowed to be asked about their sexual orientation during this time.

    Welfare Reform Act of 1996
    In 1992 Clinton promised he would "end welfare as we know it" (pg. 219). Under the Clinton administration, the welfare reform took place and the republicans, happy with this, set a fast pace for the reform to happen. In 1996, the welfare reform stripped benefits away from legal immigrants ("Kruse and Zelizer, 219"). The reform cut off their lifetime benefits after just five years. The Reform also took away any basic social services for undocumented immigrants ("Kruse and Zelizer, 220").

    Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996
    Following the Oklahoma City bombing, Clinton responded with an antiterrorism bill to increase the power of the federal government. The law "prohibited certain kinds of firearms and gave the military the power to help combat the spread of some chemicals" ("Kruse and Zelizer, 221.")
    One year following the bombings, the legislation passed terrorism as a federal crime, took away money from terrorist groups from outside organizations, and took away government review of deported immigrants.
