    Chomsky Hierarchy
One of the best known contributions by Chomsky is his hierarchy of formal grammars, which groups known rules for language structure with similar, and within broader, rules. His hierarchy shows how human languages follow broadly similar trends and contributes to his idea that the most basic structures of language are naturally found in everyone, and the differences in how people speak are generated by social pressures.
