    The North and South attempted to compromise over slavery but failed, the 1860 election caused the beginning of the civil war. After years of fighting and early losses the North finally defeated the South with the help of key victories at Vicksburg and Gettysburg. Debates were still taken over slavery until President Lincoln decided for emancipation proclomation.
  • Reconstruction

    After the long civil war, different ideas came from President Lincoln, moderate Republicans, and Radical Republicans about how to regain power in the South and protecting the rights of African Americans. Once power came back to the South reconstruction ended.

    Urban America

    Immigration began in 19th century, this caused Americans to fear that they wouldn't fit in with American society or be harmful to society. Natives and immigrants were attracted to cities due to their modern ways of living and availability of jobs. New art,literature and new ideas about governments role in society came about due to the industrialization. Life was hard for farmers due to deflation and falling crop prices, farmers joined populist party. African American rights were eroded by laws.

    Settling the West

    Settlers were attracted to western territories because of their mining and ranching. Population increased drastically to quality for statehood. After the civil war the Great Plains grew steadily with the help of the Homestead Act settlers were encouraged to move there. Conflicts arose when settlers arrived at Native American lands on the Great Plains and the government attempted to force Native Americans onto reservations and to assimilate them with the United States culture.

    After the Civil War people's lives changed as well as American Business and industry. The transcontinental railroad was built rapidly after the Civil War, although railroads meant huge profits corruption came with it as well. Advertising and mail-order catalogs were used to attract consumers to retail stores. Corporations also found various business functions and produced goods more efficiently. Unions were formed hoping to improve wages,hours,and working conditions.

    Becoming a world power

    United Staes became involved with international affairs when the need to find new markets, increase trade and to build a powerful navy came about. After defeating Spanish troops twice during the Spanish-American war, the U.S annexed the Philippians and became an imperial power. Presidents McKinely, Theodore, and Roosevelt ended conflict in Asia and Latin America and gained the Panama Canal Zone. Presidents then worked to increase American trade and influence in Latin America.

    Americans wanted to improve their society during this era, subjects they took into mind was the government being honest, efficient, and more democratic. Women's suffrage gained support and efforts to end child labor and reduce alcohol abuse were underway. In 1912 a progressive democrat won the election supporting lower tariffs more regulation of business and a creation of a federal reserve banking system.

    Militarism, alliances, imperialism and nationalism were the main causes for the war in Europe. The United States got involved with the war after attacks on American ships were made. To be able to make this fight successful progressive ideas and new government agencies were used to mobilize the population and organize the economy. Both sides lost millions of men, Americans helps the allies win although the peace treaty set up another war. Americas victory led to depression and fears back home.

    Warren Harding's administrations endured from corruption and scandals, Calvin Coolidge worked to bring back Americans faith in their government and to bring up a healthy economy. Many Americans owned new innovations and it changed their lives. Urban Americans loved the modern culture and new trends although rural people didn't agree. The Harlem Renaissance led to an increase in African American population meaning more power to them for political power.

    Great Depression begins

    Speculation in the stock market, risky lending policies, overproduction and uneven income distribution wrecked the economy and were the main causes of the Great Depression. The depression caused many Americans to lose their jobs and properties. Humorous entertainment, optimistic movies and radio programs were offered to help people get through this setback. President Hoover tried multiple ways to fix the economy but it just led to many Americans depending and demanding governments help

    After WW1 the U.S didn't want to get involved in another foreign war. In Europe and Asia aggressive and expansionist governments took power. Other nations also wanted to avoid another war, trying to negotiate peaceful agreements with Nazi Germany had failed. Nazi Germany then created restrictions and concentration camps for Jews.U.S remained neutral but help Great Britain against Germany. Tensions grew between Japan and U.S. due to territorial expansion, Japan then attacked Pearl Harbor.

    Roosevelt and the new deal

    In 1932 President Franklin Roosevelt was elected for president. Keeping his promise of a new deal he let loose a flood of legislation designed to rescue banks, industry and agriculture. Pieces of the legislation created the Works Progress Administration, the National Labor Relations Board, and Social Security Act. Roosevelt was reelected in 1936, although the new recession hurt him politically. The Fair Labor Standards Act provided new protections for workers.

    After WW1 America isolated themselves from European nations trying to stay out of WW2, America went behind European nations and started producing 40% of military weapons. All sides of the war created strategies showing that Germany would not win. Americans faced problems such violence or new opportunities, this is when government took control of society. Fighting broke out in both Europe and Pacific this led to the deafeat of the Axis powers. Allies are preventing future global wars.

    Leaders of Britain, U.S and the Soviet Union tried to compromise a solution to the tensions that have grown since the war ended. Reasons tensions have grown is some do not agree with the freedom Soviets were going to give nations they controlled.Greece Iran and Germany were all supported by President Truman to contain communism.The government attempted to pull out communist from the government. Americans learned to live with the threat of nuclear attack. Eisenhower directed the CIA.

    Power of the Unions was limited and rejected President Truman's idea of a "Fair Deal". When Eisenhower was elected he cut back government programs and started the interstate highway system. In the 1950's young people and adults were divided by the new technology and new entertainment. People in the inner cities and Appalachia didn't share the general prosperity and experts started to worry about the rise of juvenile delinquency.

    After WW2 segregation was challenged by African Americans and civil right supporters. Although their efforts were opposed the federal government took a firmer stand for civil rights.In the 1960's African Americans and white supporters caught the attention of mass media and the government by creating organized protests and targeted specific inequalities.Although political rights were won for African Americans, economic inequality was still a problem.

    American troops were sent to Vietnam due to American officials concerned that the region would fall to communism during the Cold War. Americans started to protest against the war. Due to this war and all its conflicts President Johnson did not want another term as president. Nixon then became president attempting to end the nations involvement in the Vietnam War. The last years of the war changed the minds of Americans about the government and their honesty and effectiveness.

    John F Kennedy ran for President in the 1960 election, during his campaign he promised to move the nation into "the New Frontier". The reason for doing this is to stay ahead of the Soviet Union.Lyndon B Johnson became president quickly pushing for a passage of a civil rights bill and antipoverty legislation.

    Nixon won the 1968 election, accomplishing the foreign policy and easing the tensions between China and the Soviet Union. Worrying about reelection this led to the Watergate scandal.Nixon then resigned, U.S. was then trying to get through domestic and foreign crises. Throughout the 1960's and 70's groups including African Americans and people with disabilities developed ways to expand opportunities and enact their civil rights. Americans then started to protect natural resources.

    In the 1980's Americans were scared about the direction that their nation was headed, they suggested to return to conservative approaches and values. Reagan became president and cut taxes, deregulated several industries and appointed conservative justices. A massive military began to buildup that increased deficit. In the 1980's the economy and wealth increased.Cold war finally ended in Europe conflicts in the Middle East led the U.S. into another war.

    Technology has tremendously advanced since the 1980's. William Clinton won presidency in 1992 becoming the first democrat to win in 12 years. Achieving what he had promised, a new Republican Congress came about making him turn and focus more on foreign policy and scandal. Immigration became a big problem in the late twentieth century bringing in the biggest number of immigrants than ever before. Debates between Americans about the elimination of trade barriers were beneficial or not.

    In 2004, Bush won another election due to continued complications in Iraq leaving Democrats to win over control of Congress in 2006. Barack Obama was elected in 2008 becoming the first African American in American history. Obama was elected for two terms ending his presidency in 2016.

    Bush won the presidency against Al Gore in 2000, Bush focused on cutting taxes & introduced new health care & education reforms.September 11,2001 was a tragic day for America as it was attacked by terrorists. America stood together helping the survivors as a war was launched on terrorism to prevent future attacks, invading Afghanistan, which sheltered many Al-Qaeda members. Following in 2003 the U.S. invaded Iraq toppling the regime of Saddam Hussein.
