1776 North Carolina Constitution

1776

This came about in order to reestablish the rights of the people. It also was established to to help Americans whose independence is continuing to struggle. Without this we wouldn’t have the general assembly and they create NC’S laws. This ratification is what separated the powers in NC’s government and created three branches. It gave the people more rights and freedoms than they received before. In order to maintain peace and rules to be followed governors, council of states,etc. came about.

Seneca Falls Convention

Jul 20, 1848

This convention is where American women’s rights came about. Stanton made the important statement that Declaration of Independence started that all men and women were created equally. This convention is the cause for women to be able to vote. Without this women may not have been able to vote still to this day. This convention also led to African Americans being able to vote also. It also gave women other rights to be able to do things that only men use to be able to do.

Passage of the 15th Amendment

Feb 3, 1870

This amendment forbids a person race to determine whether they can vote or not. This was brought about to give freed slaves their civil rights and freedoms. Without this African Americans wouldn’t be allowed to vote. It gave them back some of the rights they deserved and were owed. It protected African Americans from those who were racist and didn’t easy to allow us to vote because of our skin color. It also led to different tactics to be formed in order to still prevent blacks from voting.

Passage of the 17th Amendment

Apr 8, 1913

This amendment is where voting for senators came about. All of their powers that were listed in the constitution remained the same also. This is important because without it the people wouldn’t have a say who the senators were. We wouldn’t be able to choose a senator that would be the best for our nation. This also gave the people more rights and say on who is going to be running our nation. Without this there would also still be a lot of conflict without our government also.

Passage of the 19th Amendment

Aug 18, 1920

This Amendment fully gave women the right to be able to vote. Women being able to vote also led to women being able to work in the government. Without this women to this day wouldn't be able to vote. It is also significant because we have the same rights as men. Women could run in office now. The is also significant because government is closer to being less biased.

Indian Citizenship Act

Jun 2, 1924

This act made all natives born on the territory of our nation a citizen of the US. Before if you had more than one half or more Indian blood you citizenship was limited. This is important because It gave the Natives the right to be a citizen which they deserved. It is also important because Native women no longer had to marry an American just in order to be a citizen of the US. Though they still weren’t able to vote. Their privileges were also limited.

Passage of the 23rd Amendment

Mar 29, 1961

Washington D.C wasn't allowed to vote but they were considered citizens of the US. This amendment allowed their residents to be able to vote. This is important because it wasn't fair for them to not be able to vote and they were citizens. It expanded the rights to vote in presidential elections some more. It also allowed delegation to be allowed in Washington D.C. It is also important because more people are given a voice

Passage of the 24th Amendment

Jan 23, 1964

Though the 15th amendment gave all races that are citizens of America the right to vote. This amendment ended poll taxes from being charged on races. This is important because the reason poll taxes were created was because the whites knew that blacks couldn't afford to vote so they wouldn't be able to. This gave all people the right to vote for free. This is also because it is still illegal to charge people to vote. It also gives people the right to voice their opinion without having to pay.

Passage of the 26th Amendment

The people believed that if you were old enough to fight in the war you should be able to vote. The people created a slogan saying “old enough to fight, old enough to vote.” This was significant because we still to this day have that right to be able to vote at 18. This was also another step to more rights then we once had. If this hadn’t happened then we wouldn’t be able to vote but we could fight for our country. This is also significant because it gave us a better way to voice our opinions.
