    The Naval Race Between Germany and Great Britain
    The Naval Race between Germany and Great Britain was a form of Militarism during WWI. Beginning in 1906, Germany began to build an army fleet of ships that would be inferior to enemy gunfire called the dreadnought. Germany and Great Britain's alliance ended and the United States soon swooped in to form alliances with each of them, showing the US involvement.

    The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
    Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were shot dead by six assassins, five were from Serbia and one from Bosnia. This sparked a cause in WWI, due to the fact that an allies Archduke and his wife were assassined. Ferdinand was not very well liked among his peers, which made more people not want to have him next up to become King. This led to the assassination of Franz and his wife.

    Due to the assassination of Archduke Franz and his wife Sophie, Germany sides with Austria-Hungary for them to commit any revenge for what Serbia did. With the blank check being sent this was a recipe for disaster leading up to World War I. Since Germany was siding with Serbia this was also at a cost of going to war with Russia, which could have turned into a European War.

    August 3rd 1914, Germany declares War on France, also invading Belgium whom was a neutral nation. Great Britain gives Germany an oppurtunity to withdraw from Belgium, but Germany refuses. This leaves Great Britain no other option then to declare war on Germany. August 4th, 1914 the United States declares that it is neutral. The Austro-Hungarian Empire declares war on Russia followed by Great Britain and France declaring war on Austria-Hungary, who then invades Serbia.

    On May 7th, the Lusitania was coming up the coast of Ireland, when it was shot with a torpedo by a German U-boat. Many nations began to side against Germany due to the sinking of the Lusitania and the killing of so many innocent people.The United States joined the allies to fight against Germany in the war.

    Germany declared the area around the British Isles a war zone, All merchant ships even neutral nations ships were going to be attacked by German ships. The U-Boat sumbarine shot torpedos at ships and sank many, killing thouands of innocent people. United States President Woodrow Wilson wanted to force an end to Germany's strikes. Germany over the next year did slow down the damage due to the nerves of US joining the war against them.

    A telegram that was sent to Mexico from Germany It was what made America enter World War I. It is named for the German man who sent it, Arthur Zimmermann. Zimmerman was the German Foreign Secretary. Zimmermann sent it to the German ambassador in the United States, who then sent it to Mexico. Somewhere along the way the British got the note and deciphered it and gave it to President Woodrow Wilson who then decided that the US would go into WWI.

    On April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson went to Congress hoping for approval to go into War against Germany. Wilson discussed how Germany did not stop its unrestricted submarine warfare, which they had pledged to stop. Also the Zimmerman note which was to get Mexico into an alliance against the United States. were his reasons for declaring war. The United States officially declared war on German ally Austria-Hungary on December 7, 1917.

    The Treaty of Versailles was signed between the Allied Powers (Serbia, Russia, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium and the United States.) and Germany on June 28, 1919. This ended World War I. The treaty was harsh on Germany. It forced Germany to accept responsibility for cause and damage of the war. Germany was forced to give up land to France, and to pay 132 billion marks to pay for all the damage.

    A feeling of disillusionment spread across the world as people decided that their governments knew how to serve the best interests of themselves. One of four men lost his life in battle. Altogether, the war killed 10 to 13 million people, nearly a third of them civilians. The future looked tough to the families whose family were killed in war, and created a sense of a scary reality for the future.

    Germany and the Weimar Republic were on the brink of financial collapse and were in danger of not being able to pay post war repairs. The Dawes Plan was a plan to help collect German reparations after WW1. The Dawes Plan was worked out by American banker Charles G. Dawes as a payment plan for Germany. It was proposed by the Dawes Committee on April 9, 1924, and accepted by the Allied and German Governments on August 30, 1924.

    Germany had to borrow lots of money from America to pay debt to England and France after the war. In 1929, the United States faced economic depression. America could not keep funding germany during the Depression. In 1923, Adolf Hitler attempted to overthrow the German government. By January 1933, Hitler and the Nazis ruled Germany. Hitler became a dictator. The Nazis acted quickly against people who opposed of the way they ran the government. They disbanded political parties.

    The stock market crashed due to overproduction of goods, weak banks, overspending, and credit problems. As news of the stock market crash spread, people hurried to their banks to withdraw their money. People who were wealthy lost all they had. Many companies went out of business and many people lost their jobs. At the peak of the depression, 1 out of every 4 people were without a job. Between 1930 and 1935, nearly 750,000 farms were lost through bankruptcy or sheriff sales.
