The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie, Duchess of Heisenberg, occurred on 28 June 1914 in Sarajevo when they were shot dead by Gavrilo Princip.
