He sells his sheep and uses the money to go to Africa and is promptly robbed in Tangier. -

Santiago works for a year in a glass shop until he has the money to cross the Sahara. -

He joins a caravan and ends up in an oasis, where he has a vision of an invading army. -

Because his vision is right and he warns the oasis leaders in time, Santiago is made counselor of the community. -

Santiago falls in love with a girl named Fatima at the oasis but knows he must leave her to seek the treasure -

Santiago meets an alchemist who helps him cross the rest of the desert to get to the pyramids. -

At the pyramids Santiago digs for treasure but doesn't find anything. Some thugs beat him up and steal what gold he does have, but they helpfully tell him that one of them dreamed of a treasure in an abandoned church in Spain. -

Santiago knows exactly which church they're talking about, and goes back to Spain to dig up the treasure. He plans to head back to Africa with his riches and get Fatima.
