    During the years 1780’s France sunk into a huge debt where they barely had any money and were scarce on food because of bad weather. One of the reasons that lead to the lack of money was when they helped out the colonists in gaining their independence and winning the war against the British. On the other hand, the royal family was spending all of the money on luxuries. Because of other debts passed on by previous kings and in the year 1786, the debt doubled.

  • Estates General Meeting

    Estates General Meeting
    King Louis decided that he was not going to cut short his expenses. A solution for his economic problem was taxing the nobles. The second estate was not in agreement so, they forced King Louis to call a meeting on May 5th, 1789 in Versailles of the Estates-General where a new law of taxes was passed. A meeting like this was not called in 175 years and something like this was very important.
  • Establishing of National Assembly

    In the General Estates, the 3rd estates had more chance of winning. Sieyes stood up for them with the idea of a National Assembly, most of the 3rd estate voted for that and won. On June 17, 1789, the National Assembly was established which made the absolute monarchy become a representative government. Then, the 3rd estate representatives were not allowed to enter their meeting room, so they organized a meeting and said an oath to stay until a new constitution was made in a Tennis Court.
  • Bastille

    Bastille
    On July 14, 1789 an angry mob of people attacked Paris. Because they were very angry, the famous Paris prison Bastille was hacked (the commander) and many men died. That day the attackers paraded around with dead men heads on a stick.
  • Death of Old Regimen

    On the night of August 4, nobles were declaring that they approved and supported liberty and equality for all. So, by the next morning the Old Regime was gone because the second estate had disappeared which meant that the nobles and clergy equal to the 3rd estate.
  • Declaration of the Rights of Man

    Declaration of the Rights of Man
    On this date the National Assembly made the document of Declaration of the Rights of Man. This document stated that “men are born and remain free and equal in rights”. These rights included liberty, property, security, resistance to oppression, freedom of speech and religion.
  • Womans March in Versailles

    Womans March in Versailles
    Around October, many woman from Parisians marched 12 miles over to Versailles. Their goal was to protest on the price of the bread to the king. It became very violent and intense, some woman even starved.
  • King Louis Betrayal

    When the government was changed from an absolute monarchy to a representative government, King Louis and his family knew they were in trouble. So, Louis seeked help from the enemy and tried to escape to Australia. Then, they were caught, sent to Paris and that’s when King Louis was destined to death in The Guillotine.
  • Legislative Body

    Legislative Body
    By this date the National Assembly created a new constitution where all the absolute monarchy became a limited monarchy. Surprisingly, although King Louis would lose a lot of power, he accepted this change. Also the Legislative Body was created which had the power to create laws, but it did not take the power from the king to enforce laws.
  • War

    Because many countries were seeing all of the changes that were happening in France, they were afraid that it might happen to them. So, these countries solutions was to demand that King Louis come back to their position. The Legislative Assembly did not agree, so the declared war on April 1792.
